It’s been a busy week in the Eastern Pacific, with three tropical storms marching their way west: Hone, Gilma, and Hector 🌬. Because of hurricane naming conventions, it’s unusual to have hurricanes with names starting with the same letter in the same ocean. However, because Hone developed into a tropical storm in the Central Pacific, it received a Hawaiian name. The two areas of the pacific within US territory, Eastern and Central, are handled by separate hurricane offices: the National Hurricane Center in Miami and the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu. Hone passed south of the Hawaiian Islands this weekend as a Category 1 hurricane, bringing over 20 inches of rain to parts of the Big Island ☔ . Gilma is expected to pass north of the islands as a tropical depression by the end of this week. Meanwhile, Typhoon Shanshan in the Western Pacific is on track to make landfall in Japan by late Thursday.

Since January 1st, lightning-ignited wildfires have scorched more than 2.1 million acres of land across the US. 🌩 Dry lightning — strikes from storms with little to no rain — poses a serious risk by sparking fires in drought-stricken areas. Yesterday in Golden, Colorado, a dry cloud-to-ground lightning flash (shown below) struck a ridge, starting a wildfire that has now burned over 200 acres. Vaisala’s lightning data provides crucial information on the location, strength, and timing of these strikes, helping to pinpoint wildfire ignition points.
