Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and the entire university community affected by this senseless act of violence. It is important to acknowledge that such violence is not isolated to one location. University campuses are meant to be spaces of learning, growth and community. The tragedy at Charles University serves as a painful reminder of the vulnerability we face in environments that should be sanctuaries of knowledge and progress. Such incidents not only shatter lives but also leave lasting scars on the collective psyche of a community. As we advocate for change, this report provides key recommendations for policymakers to address these disparities. Thomas Toch, the founding director of FutureEd at Georgetown University, insightfully remarked: "Education Reform Now D.C.’s analysis of college-going among District of Columbia residents makes clear that the city’s work to improve the life prospects of its neediest citizens needs to include more opportunities to get to and through college and other meaningful post-secondary programs.
