Both the hydrogen and carbon dioxide price determine the cost to produce e-methanol. However what will happen with the methanol price when carbon dioxide prices becomes negative due to the ETS price moving towards 200$/ton by 2035? For this purpose I created the graph below. Interestingly, turning fossil CO2 emissions (with an ETS price penalty) into methanol for fuel purposes would only postpone CO2 emissions to our atmosphere. If we would produce plastics from this carbon recycled methanol, the carbon would be stored into the plastics and the plastics recycling loop in the long term. Therefore, it would make sense to promote carbon recycled methanol for the production of materials instead of fuels. Do you agree? 𝗔𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝟭𝟬𝟭: 𝗲-𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗹 Although we all know that CO2 is essential to sustaining life on earth, we’re now used to seeing it as the villain in climate change. However, e-methanol gives this ghastly gas a new role: as a raw material for creating sustainable marine fuel (#SMF). Here’s how this innovative process has the potential to change the game. E-methanol is a more sustainable form of #greenmethanol, produced by capturing CO2 from industrial processes or the air and combining it with hydrogen from renewable energy like wind or solar ☀️💨 Several experiments are now also being done to use carbon capture installations on ship exhausts, enabling shipowners to set up onboard carbon capture and storage (#OCCS) on their vessels. The dream is to make shipping fuel from these captured carbon molecules, creating a somewhat circular system ♻ Okay, back to e-methanol: Producing it not only utilises excess CO2 but also leverages renewable energy to produce hydrogen through water electrolysis. Topic: “Decarbonizing Shipping: Scaling up Production of Net-Zero Greenhouse Gas Ship Fuels” Potential hydrogen-based zero-emissions alternative fuels like ammonia, methanol and methane are receiving a great deal of attention as a way to decarbonize large ocean-going ships. This presentation will examine why major shipping companies seem to be taking different pathways to achieve this goal and what roadblocks they will face along the way.   As the global shipping industry begins to chart a course towards 2050 and achieving net-zero emissions, a great deal of interest has begun to be focused on alternative fuels based on hydrogen. Options under consideration include ammonia, methanol and methane. As part of ongoing research on reducing greenhouse gases from marine fuels, Clear Seas has identified a number of potential roadblocks not only in the performance, safety, storage, and feasibility for use on existing ships of these fuels, but also on the scalability of renewable hydrogen production as a feedstock. In this presentation, Dr. Paul Blomerus, Executive Director at Clear Seas will share the latest results from Clear Seas’ research and will identify critical areas of focus for technology and policy innovation. #JustH2Transit researcher Nina Wessberg visited the Tampere Hydrogen Summit on 22 January 2025 to hear what will pave the way to a clean hydrogen economy. The answer seems to be synthetic methane to replace current natural gas needs, synthetic methanol as transport fuel, and synthetic ammonia for marine transport and the fertiliser industry. Energy Consumption:                 Green methanol is more efficient. Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Green methanol shows lower emissions overall. 📊 Comparison Highlights: ·     Synthesis Difficulty: Methanol is easier to produce. ·     Technical Maturity: Methanol has more industrial applications. Cost: Methanol production is relatively low-cost. ·     Emissions: Methanol emits 7.66 kg/GJ vs methane's 6.9 kg/GJ (no slip considered). 💡 Conclusion: Green methanol (both E- and Bio-) currently presents a more feasible option for immediate application in shipping due to lower emissions and higher technological maturity.
