A new textile park to have ZLD to address pollution concerns 1) A new textile industry park is set to be established near Ahmedabad, which is anticipated to address the pollution challenges faced by the existing textile industry in Ahmedabad. 2) Being developed by Rupam Eco Green Textile Park, the facility will span across 100 acres of land at Mahijadi village near Ahmedabad. The company had signed an MoU to invest Rs 500 crore for the textile park project in the recently held Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit-2024. 3) This park will have the necessary infrastructure to support the textile industry. One of the key features of this textile park will be a 6 MLD Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system, which is an advanced wastewater treatment process that eliminates liquid waste and prevents water pollution.

As a child, during summer vacations, one of my favourite activities to do was ‘making something best out of waste’. I used to find creative ways to utilise waste papers, clothes, wood blocks, clay, etc. and make functional and beautiful products out of it. It made me happy to not having to throw away the waste, but to be able to find applications to use it in some form or other. I was unaware of how big the issue of waste generation is at that time. It was only when I was studying solid waste management course, I got to learn about the concepts of various types of waste, current waste management systems, issues associated with the landfill sites, and so on and so forth. Before that, I had not thought about what happens to waste after we throw it in dustbins. The subject evoked my interest and I visited landfill site in Ahmedabad. And I was shocked to see the mountain of waste made of all the waste we as the city dwellers have been generating over many years. It was just getting bigger and bigger day by day. And I have been researching about various solutions for the issue since then. And then as I worked on the subject further, I understood that this issue is the outcome of our current linear economy model that operates on take-make-throw away system. We take resources from the earth, we make products out of it, and once they are used, we dump them in the landfill. And one of the feasible solutions we have been able to develop is ‘Circular Economy’. It is about identifying and closing the loops and keeping the resources in use for as long as possible, having longest possible use phase by performing repairing, refurbishing, repurposing, reusing, and recycling. Turning waste materials into recycled bricks, meet the person known as the Recycle Man Of India. We'll share his entire story with you, but before that, follow SavageStories. Meet Dr. Binish Desai, born in Valsad, Gujarat, who, since childhood, experimented with creating something creative from waste materials. Due to this, he conceived the idea of recycling waste paper from paper mills to make bricks and worked on it for nearly 2 years. Dr. Binish first created a prototype of a house using 3000 bricks. He presented it at Innovation Melas, where he started receiving orders from several companies. Subsequently, progressing consistently, he constructed around 11,000 toilets, homes, and buildings in various regions of Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh. In the same vein, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he initiated the production of Eco Bricks from biomedical waste like masks, gloves, and PPE kits, contributing to waste reduction. The Pune Municipal Corporation adopted and launched the Punaravartan campaign for 2024. This campaign which was initiated by the eCoexist Foundation in 2020 aims to reintroduce circularity in Indian festivals and rituals so that they become completely zero waste. Currently it is focused on the natural clay which is used to make Ganesh idols and can be easily reused if it is collected systematically. We have been able to collect over 20000 kg of clay each year for the past two years in the city of Pune as over 22 organisations joined hands to make this possible. Thane Nasik and PCMC too have trialed it and collected between 1 to 4 tons each last year. Now the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board is considering making this campaign mandatory in all 27 Municipal corporations across the state to reduce the deposition of this clay into water bodies or landfill. A small idea which began in the midst of the lockdown because I did not want to throw away broken pieces of clay idols now captures the imagination of the country. Plastic Rain Is Here! 🌧 A recent study by the Indian Institute of Technology Patna has found hazardous microplastics in rainwater samples collected in Patna, India. -Microplastics are tiny plastic particles, less than 5 millimetres in diameter. -They come from various sources, including the breakdown of larger plastic items, synthetic textiles, and microbeads in personal care products. -These microplastics can find their way into our water bodies, harming aquatic life and potentially entering the food chain. The IIT Patna study found an alarming number of microplastics in rainwater samples collected from both urban and peri-urban areas of Patna.
