With the start of June we have officially entered Atlantic Hurricane Season. It is important to have a plan in place for emergencies like a hurricane, especially in healthcare settings. This plan should include steps for evacuations, medical treatment, and communication among staff and patients. Trained staff, evacuation and communication plans, stockpiles of supplies are all critical pieces of a well-defined hurricane plan. Please be sure to study your state's recommended planning for healthcare facilities in the event of a hurricane. South Carolina is a strong example. #HurricanPreparedness #HurricaneSeason

It's National Public Health Week, weekend edition! Saturday's focus is on emergency preparedness. Highly relevant when you think of all the floods, fires, earthquakes, hurricanes, and tornadoes that can threaten our health. Being prepared for emergencies is on my mind as I road trip this weekend to see Monday's total solar eclipse. As individuals, we can all prepare for natural disasters and other emergencies. Build a supply kit. Coordinate a plan that the entire family knows. Even host a community disaster training with an organization like the American Red Cross. On a broader scale, we can support mitigation efforts, taking action before disaster strikes to lessen its impact. Which, honestly, will help all of us spend less time in emergency mode and more in proactive mode. Are you prepared for an emergency in your community? Has your community developed a mitigation plan? #NPHW #NationalPublicHealthWeek #emergencypreparedness
