The WHO South-East Asia Regional Strategic Framework for improving newborn and child health has been prepared to offer guidance to Member States (Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea [DPR Korea], India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Timor-Leste) to develop and strengthen national strategies and plans to improve newborn and child health and development. The Strategic Framework advocates for Member States to integrate an inclusive child health and development perspective into policies and actions, ensuring that governments commit to providing a healthy start for every child, aligning with child rights and overall societal and economic development goals. It emphasizes the importance of assessing the local situation to undertake appropriate actions and underscores the need for multisectoral collaboration, alignment with related health programmes and strengthening health systems. The implementation of initiatives in alignment with this Framework requires enhanced planning and capacity at both the national and subnational levels to scale up evidence-based interventions for newborn and child health across the continuum of care. However, it must be noted that this Framework is not an isolated strategy for newborn and child health. It recognizes that newborn and child health and well-being depend on the good health, nutrition and well-being of mothers and envisions it to be a part of a life-course continuum of care, which aligns harmoniously with maternal health programmes proximally and adolescent health programmes distally during programme implementation in countries.

We're excited to announce the launch of our six-month campaign, "Silver Lining For Healthier Families," dedicated to improving maternal, newborn, and child health in Jigawa state. Why It Matters: Jigawa's maternal, newborn, and child health data reveal stark realities, with distressing mortality rates. As per Nigeria Health Watch's available statistics, approximately 1,100 deaths occur per 100,000 live births, alongside infant mortality rate according to the multiple indicator cluster survey [MISC] that stands at 83 deaths per 1,000 live births. These figures underscore the urgency of our mission. Our campaign is dedicated to addressing these challenges head-on through tailored interventions and community empowerment. Our Strategic Approach: -Provision of Birthing Kits: Providing essential kits for safer deliveries to expectant mothers. -Offering Free Ultrasound Services: Providing crucial assistance to pregnant women facing complications, ensuring safer childbirth experiences. -Engagement of Fathers and Communities: Fostering paternal involvement in MNCH through education on kangaroo mother care, promoting diaper-changing initiatives, encouraging active participation in Antenatal care, and challenging traditional gender roles. -Advocating for Kangaroo Mother Care: Championing the adoption of proven methods for premature and low birth weight infants. -Advocating for Routine Immunization: Safeguarding newborns from preventable illnesses through persistent advocacy efforts. We always appreciate the open door partnership with the state Ministry of Health. Let's join forces on this journey toward universal health, starting with our most vulnerable. Your support is instrumental as we work towards a brighter, healthier future for all! TY Danjuma Foundation #healthforall #MNCHChampions #jointhecause #Silverliningng #SLNI

QI and MPDSR Trainer of Trainers (TOT) Workshop With the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) Malawi office, the Reproductive Health Directorate (RHD) has organized a week-long TOT workshop from July 1-5, 2024. This training targets district Quality Improvement (QI) and Maternal Health (MNH) mentors. Malawi continues to face high maternal and neonatal mortality rates, similar to other sub-Saharan nations. One of the primary objectives of this training is to integrate MPDSR (Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response) and QI. The goal is to ensure that action points developed in MPDSR are implemented through QI initiatives, such as developing projects to address challenges leading to maternal and perinatal deaths. This integrated approach is promising and vital in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality and addressing other issues in the MNH and MPDSR spheres.

🩹 We're continuing our series on DIWA-supported projects, focusing this time on vital maternal health initiatives in Ghana. As the nation works toward the SDG Target to reduce maternal deaths to less than 70 per 100,000 births by 2030, understanding the complexities of this issue is crucial. 1️⃣ Ghana's 2017 Maternal Health survey indicated that one out of every seven Ghanaian women aged 12-49 dies from preventable causes related to maternal health. Chinenye Bembir (Nee Afonne), Aaron Abuosi, Peter Bembir, Augustina Boadu, Duah Dwomoh and Edith Wellington evaluate programs implemented by the Korea Foundation of International Healthcare and the Ministry of Health between 2013 and 2018 and their role in enhancing healthcare, medical equipment, and referral systems. This research could guide future quality improvement interventions in maternal, newborn, and child health across Ghana. Learn more: https://buff.ly/47oZW2p 2️⃣Due to economic and cultural factors, progress in reducing maternal mortality has been slow. With a focus on Northern Ghana, Aaron Abuosi and Aleksandra Jakubowski study ways to encourage early prenatal care and integrate modern maternal services with community values. Their approach includes community education, personalized follow-ups, and home visits to develop effective birth plans. Learn more: https://buff.ly/3RUWOWe

Is the customer always right...? This article makes me question what quality in healthcare truly means. What happened? a. Clients complained that the cost of antenatal tests were too high and frequent. b. Facility reduced the frequency of urinalysis testing (screening for pre-eclampsia). c. Some clients were happy. d. A few Pre-eclampsia cases were not identified promptly, increasing risk of complications. Post project Aisha: e. ANC checklist was instituted f. Urinalysis testing was re-commenced at every antenatal visit. g. More pre-eclampsia cases were promptly identified, reducing risk of complications to clients. Learnings: The customer is always right, only in matters of taste. In a field like healthcare where there is a lot of asymmetrical information, we cannot afford to give in to the every whim and caprice of our clients. Especially when it may compromise on the quality of care they receive.
Showcasing Impact: Project Aisha Supports Improvement of Maternal Care at Matador Medicare Services, Lagos In a quest to raise the standard of maternal care, Matador Medicare recently embarked on a transformative journey with the adoption of quality Antenatal Care (ANC) checklist, which is one of the innovative quality initiatives being implemented by Project Aisha across selected facilities in Lagos and Kaduna states. This checklist seeks to guide care providers in providing comprehensive care to pregnant women, enabling prompt identification of pregnancy-related complications to enhance maternal and newborn outcomes.
