I say this as a guy that spent his late 20’s as a broke single father of three that didn’t have a car at times. I understand why people instantly applaud this post but I wonder if ideology around public transit blinds us to more rational solutions. Let me offer some food for thought. Let’s assume that the housed but SNAP receiving home gets $100/month in benefits. Using this math of $1.75/round trip & assuming a person goes to the grocery store 2X per month, that’s $42yr in transit costs. With walking/waiting/riding they are spending a min of 1hr on the round trip, or 2hrs per month. Here’s the issue. An annual Instacart subscription that gives free delivery for orders over $35 is only $100/yr. So even before you assume that the household is paying $10 more per year in the Marion County transit tax, they are only saving $58/yr or approx $5/mon by riding the bus. Has anyone asked a person that is struggling to get to the grocery store if it’s worth $5/month to save two hours in transit? Or put another way, wouldn’t we rather them be home w their children, working more hours, or relaxing like we do instead of running to the grocery store? Also, if we do that in volume it’s pretty easy to negotiate with a vendor like Instacart to reduce the rate for SNAP users knowing their volume will increase. Policy makers should abandon these sacred cows & look for creative solutions.

Each day it can be hard to stay driven toward our mission, but this is important, even when the waters get a little choppy. Remember 1983 when Chuck Norris was "attacked" by a shark? Of course, the shark barely survived. lol —just like Chuck, when you’re clear on your purpose, nothing can knock you off course. We might not be facing sharks, but in business, distractions and challenges constantly try to pull us away from what really matters. Just like Chuck stayed focused (and fearless), we have to keep our eyes on the bigger mission, making sure our processes and daily actions serve that purpose. At Walmart that is Saving the customer money, and time, so that they can live better! Random observations after living in America for a month. Surely one of the few places in the world where scotch, wine and beer are sold in pharmacies… just meters from the remedies and treatments for hangovers and much worse. Cigarettes in fully branded packaging are sold on full display with almost no health warnings. Plastic bags are still the default at the checkout… given out freely and for free at Walmart and Target… in fact everywhere we went. Guns are still sold in department stores. Weed is everywhere… particularly in Times Square and around the streets of Manhattan. Graffiti is hard to find despite endless freeway networks, where speed limits seem to be a suggestion rather than enforced. This really stood out to me in Phoenix as I became familiar with driving on the other side of the road. Actually, if you cruise on or just above the posted limit, expect a flow of vehicles to sit close on your tail before shooting past you. People are really polite… readily holding the door for each other at any number of a growing list of fast food chains. Road rage is almost non existent. $1.50 HOTDOG 🌭 Costco hot dogs have cost $1.50 since the 1980s, despite inflation saying the price tag should be closer to $4.50 these days. While most companies have been busy raising prices the last few years to squeeze extra revenue from their customers, Costco hasn’t blinked on its mainstay item. #Costco would rather operate its hot dog business at a loss because it builds customer loyalty and brings customers in the door (in which people buy higher margin items). After all, it’s membership business is the golden ticket, and it just raised the annual fee. In a year where dozens of management teams have destroyed shareholder value based on management missteps, this C-Suite continues to best understand their customer base and execute its strategy. Since my initial review of Kroger Boost, I’ve relied on it exclusively for grocery deliveries over the past seven months. Paul Chambers was the one who got me to try Boost, and it's been quite a journey. Meet Pamela. The other day, she was performing a sampling demo, and a Costco member returned to Pamela's cart. The member presented Pamela with a bag of Lindor Truffles (and the receipt for it, so she'd be able to take it home). The reason, she said, was because Pamela was so friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic while performing her demo. Pamela was utterly surprised and didn't even want to accept the gift but the member insisted. (And Pam ended up offering to share the candy with her teammates, because she's a great person.) Our job isn't life-altering. We aren't operating on the injured, nor negotiating peace between warring factions. We are presenting products to the public, engaging them and hopefully turning them on to their new favorite foods, household goods, and services. We provide a valuable service to companies large and small, global and local. And every day, all day, we smile, we give away free food and other fun products, and we build connections with the people in our communities.
