To go to college, or to not go to college. I 100% missed this single key factor when I made my decision: There is lot of debate in the entrepreneurial community if college makes sense anymore for the money. I'm not going to advocate for a certain side, but I am going to recommend high school graduates thinking about business school consider something most don't when selecting a school: The city matters as much as the university. Here is why👇 When I reflect on my college experience, the greatest learnings came from outside the classroom. Where was I learning exactly? From the businesses that surrounded our university at California State University, Chico. I interned, I shadowed, I did class projects, all with these local businesses that opened their doors and let students into their operations. It was the real world. Not something out of a book. Having a strong community of businesses large and small, close by to your university, creates the ultimate learning playground for business school. So if you are set on going to business school, I recommend considering the city as much as you consider the university. Big thanks to Chico businesses for teaching me so much when I was there 🚀

One of the privileges I have each day is reviewing and approving grants to support striving tech students - typically low-income undergrads in computing fields from underrepresented communities. You might think it would be a slow time of the year for Last Mile Education Fund, but we're processing dozens of grants per week. You would be surprised how difficult it can be for many students to access opportunities they have earned such as an internship or research experience because of financial constraints. This week alone we invested in: -A student trying to juggle rent obligations for her college apartment until the lease ends in July, as well as housing at her internship site across the country - plus afford a return trip to move out and place her belongings in storage midway through the summer. -An intern at a major insurance company struggling to pay for rent, food or transportation during an internship that started weeks ago - but doesn't pay the students the relocation stipend until their first paycheck - 30 days after starting. -Funded several students to attend the ColorStack conference in August in San Jose. Networking and recruiting opportunities like these are critical to preparing to launch into the tech workforce, but often inaccessible due to upfront expenses as well as opportunity cost. These are just a few examples of the 'hidden costs' along the journey to a tech degree and career that can trip up financially vulnerable students. For affluent students, these costs are typically covered by their families. For students from poverty, they can be insurmountable. Switching gears from my usual CMO Insights to share a slice of my heart dedicated to a cause close to me: Minds Matter Southern California. Leadership isn't confined to the corporate arena. It extends its roots deep into the heart of non-profits, mirroring the challenges and triumphs of for-profit worlds. Building teams, forging sustainable processes, and driving growth are universal themes. After 20+ years with Minds Matter, the journey continues to astonish me.
