The importance of crocheting for learning At Hai, we follow the Waldorf pedagogy, a holistic educational approach that emphasizes experiential learning through manual work, fostering creativity, practical skills, and a deep connection to the natural world. And, guess what activity encompasses all this and more? You guessed right - crocheting! From a very early age, all of our students learn the art of crocheting. Some of the key benefits of this activity are: Improves fine motor skills: When children crochet, they refine their eye-hand coordination and strengthen their hand muscles, which are basic prerequisites for literacy readiness. Children with developed fine motor skills can hold pencils and pens correctly and mimic writing movements more easily, experiencing less frustration when learning how to write. Develops concentration: While crocheting, children must focus on their hand movements and crocheting strategy to complete their artwork. This skill is transferable to many areas of school and life where sustained focus is crucial, particularly in today's fast-paced digital world. Builds self-discipline: Students work on crochet tasks from start to finish, helping them plan their work, assess progress, and adapt as needed. This process promotes resilience, confidence, and self-esteem. Hai teachers observe these and many more benefits in the classroom with this activity. For example, they also use crocheting as a form of children’s emotional self-regulation. Students find that crocheting brings calm and a sense of fulfillment, helping them set aside worries and focus their energy on this productive and enjoyable art. It is common at Hai to display our students' work for appreciation by classmates, parents, and the local community. We couldn’t be prouder of our children! #haiafrica #ngo #kenya

My good colleague Steven Arnfjord and I have a brand new article in Nordisk Tidsskrift for Pedagogikk & Kritikk, titled 'Repositioning Power Relations in Indigenous Social Work Education.' It's open access, so feel free to read it if you're interested in decolonizing curriculum development for social work education in Greenland. The article explores ways to center Indigenous knowledge and approaches within the field: https://lnkd.in/eE-6YtCu #socialwork #Indigenous #Education #Ilisimatusarfik

🌱 *Harnessing the Power of Socio-Cultural Context in Education* 🌱 One of the most meaningful aspects of my our work is how Shiksharth deeply values and integrates a child's socio-cultural context to facilitate their learning journey. I vividly recall attending a training by Jodo Gyan, where Dr. Usha Menon shared a powerful insight: as adults, we often assume we are the ones teaching children, but the truth is that every child brings with them a wealth of experiences shaped by their own socio-cultural background. It is through recognizing and respecting these lived experiences that true learning and development occur. In a world that increasingly demands quick outcomes, there’s a tendency to believe that social change can be achieved within the timeframe of a one-year project. But real, sustainable impact requires us to keep the child at the heart of everything we do, ensuring that our efforts acknowledge and build upon their unique perspectives. Social change isn’t instant—it’s nurtured over time, with children leading the way. 💡✨ #EducationForAll #CulturallyResponsiveTeaching #ChildCenteredLearning #SocialChange #Education #InclusiveEducation

#CTE #CTEPathways As a CTE teacher, I believe that these pathways are key to reducing the language gap by embracing students’ linguistic and cultural experiences. School districts should integrate language and culture as a standard for monitoring the growth of CTE programs. The more we equip classrooms with tools and resources to support multilingualism and multiculturalism, the better prepared our students will be to succeed in a global workforce. I’m passionate about advocating for bilingual education in CTE classrooms because I’ve seen how it transforms opportunities and creates equity for all. #CTEPathways #CareerTechnicalEducation #MultilingualEducation #EquityInEducation #BilingualEducation #CulturalInclusion #WorkforceDevelopment #GlobalSkills #InclusiveEducation #CTEMatters #StudentVoices #BreakingLanguageBarriers #InnovateWithCTE #DiversityInLearning #EducationForAll #FutureReady #CTELeads #TeachingEquity #GlobalCitizenship #LanguageMatters #AdvocateForBilingualEd #CTEFuture
