🔔 Explore an Impressive Data Visualization of Earthquake Events with Magnitudes of 6.0 and Greater from 1900 to November 2019. 💡 This animated map makes use of USGS data to map earthquake events with a magnitude of 6.0 and greater from 1900 to November 2019. The depths of the earthquakes have been exaggerated so we can actually see the relative depths of these events. This map also highlights several key earthquakes in the last 120 years, including the 1906 San Francisco (M7.9) earthquake, the Great Chilean Earthquake (M9.5) of 1960, and the more recent event that rocked Haiti (M7.1) in 2010. #earthquakeengineering #structuralengineering #civilengineering #engineering #earthquakes #seismology #geology #geophysics #seismic #earthquake #massive #usgs #science #event #earth #earthscience

I made the following map describing the epicentral distribution of the March 2024 Bawean earthquake swarm, with data scraped from infoBMKG's Twitter account. The epicentres are drawn on top of the Bawean structural map from Lunt (2019), suggesting that the sinistral-moving West-15 Fault is the causative structure for the recent Bawean swarm. The sinistrality of the West-15 Fault had been known at least 30 years before the swarm, as indicated by Manur & Barraclough (1994). It is impossible to link the March 2024 Bawean earthquake swarm with Java Trench subduction 540 km south of it as the hypocentral depths of the swarm are <100 km, very shallow compared to the depth of the subducted plate (600 to 650 km, Slab2.0, Hayes, 2018). https://lnkd.in/gF74386u #earthquake #geoscience #geology #bawean #geophysics #javasea #indonesiangeology #breakingnews

GeoQuiz: What stress regimes do these focal solutions represent? Bonus question: Can you infer the orientation of SHmax from the focal solution parameters? Did you know that SHmax orientation can be inferred from earthquakes? In addition to stress indicators like wellbore failure observations (breakouts and drilling induced fractures), earthquake focal mechanisms can be used to infer far field stress orientations. #geomechanics #geophysics #earthquake #uae #middleeastenergy #indonesia #malaysia #vietnam #japan #colombia #algeria #tectonics #structuralgeology #india #china #nigeria

Thrilled to be sharing our expertise in seismic monitoring at the 8th International Geologica Belgica Meeting. Our discussions today have focused on the critical role of seismic nodes in understanding earthquake behavior, volcanic activity, and fault dynamics. We're excited to continue to collaborate with the seismological community to advance research and mitigate risks throughout this conference and beyond! #Geophysics #Seismology #EarthquakeResearch #VolcanoResearch

The impressive dynamics of waves... and the importance of early warning
Model showing the 2011 Tōhoku M9.1 earthquake tsunami evolution💡 A high-resolution nested global-Japan coastal FVCOM system was used to simulate the March 11, 2011 Tōhoku M9 earthquake-induced tsunami waves and coastal inundation along the northeastern coast of Honshu Island in the western Pacific Ocean. Experiments were made with initial fields provided by five seismic rupture models under realistic conditions with inclusion of the Kuroshio, tides and wind forcing. Results show that the model-computed intensities and distributions of tsunami waves and subsequent coastal inundation could be significantly influenced by initial conditions, even though all five cases were capable of reproducing key features of the tsunami waves. 🌍📊 Earthquake Analysis in Pakistan (2020 - May 2024)📊🌍 I'm excited to share a comprehensive earthquake map of Pakistan that I created using ArcMap 10.8. This map visualizes earthquake events from 2020 to May 2024, categorized by magnitude. 🔍 Key Insights: - The map highlights the distribution and frequency of earthquakes across various regions in Pakistan. - Earthquakes are categorized into five magnitude ranges: - 2.6 - 3.6 (Green Triangle) - 3.6 - 4.2 (Red Circle) - 4.2 - 4.6 (Blue Square) - 4.6 - 5.1 (Yellow Circle) - 5.1 - 5.9 (Green Star) #GIS #RemoteSensing #EarthquakeAnalysis #SeismicHazard #ArcMap #Pakistan #Geophysics #Geology #DataVisualization #DisasterManagement #RiskAssessment
