While the practice of carbon capture and storage (CCS) offers a promising pathway to reducing CO2 emissions, large scale CCS projects come with the risk of induced seismicity - earthquakes triggered by human activities. In our latest blog article, resident expert Holger Mandler provides an overview of what induced seismicity is and discusses the importance of seismicity monitoring in ensuring safe and stable carbon storage projects. Monitoring tailings dams undergoing decharacterization is crucial for ensuring structural stability and mitigating environmental risks. It enables the early detection of potential issues, thereby safeguarding nearby communities and ecosystems. In collaboration with my Nanometrics’ colleagues Camilla Rodrigues and Ben Witten, we have published a new paper which provides a complete overview of the installation procedures for seismic systems deployed in dams undergoing the decharacterization process. Moreover, the application of Passive Seismic and Seismic Interferometry in the monitoring of ground motions and medium changes is discussed. Our findings demonstrate that the ground motion level induced by operations can be 100 times greater than the background level, and that peaks of ground motion are usually induced by operations near seismic stations, detonations in the mine site or natural events. The authors demonstrate that with noise-based monitoring, it is possible to detect velocity changes related to operations and determine the occurrence of structural changes in the dam's body. I’ll be presenting this paper at the Tailings and Mine Waste Management Conference in Westminster, CO on Wed. Nov. 13 at 8:30am. I’ll be attending the upcoming GHGT-17 conference (Oct. 20-24 | Calgary, AB) and I’m looking forward to sharing some of our deep experience in seismicity monitoring and how to apply it to CCS projects. Our poster presentation takes real-world examples from other industries to design a comprehensive framework and practical recommendations for seismicity monitoring of CCS projects. The strategies balance cost, effort and risk while optimizing data collection in support of CCS operators’ overall CO2 sequestration verification plans. Leave a comment below or send me a DM if you’d like to discuss these strategies at the conference. #GHGT17 #CCUS #energytransition #seismic #seismicitymonitoring
