The world and America in particular needs this: volunteerism, civic duty and service are something sadly that seems to be at a loss in my country. The opportunity I had to serve in the Peace Corps helped me realize the necessity of community engagement and cohesion and the immense need for these opportunities for citizens around the world to build strong and resilient democracies at the local and national levels. I am also reminded of Robert Putnam’s “Bowling Alone” and an update he wrote in 2010, reflecting on the imperative of “social capital” which research has shown makes “citizens happier, healthier, reduces crime and makes governments more responsive, and honest and improves economic prosperity…” https://lnkd.in/ejFsvTs9 - all of this to say: building this social capital is imperative fo “any democracy, any society can’t be healthy without this resource…” (paraphrased!) - Americorps and Peace corps forging a stronger partnership can only be beneficial to growing social capital and I encourage all of us to look closer at our own civic engagement and service to our communities- this is where change and development starts.
🌟 Big News! 🤝 Peace Corps and AmeriCorps are forging a strategic partnership to rally all Americans for a brighter, sustainable future. Together, we're dedicated to recruiting and retaining members and volunteers who are committed to advancing the cause of peace, friendship, stronger communities, and civic engagement through service and volunteering. Diversity Recruitment | Career Management | Veteran I Disability I RAAF Veteran I Service Ambassador I Celebrant
Big shout out and kudos to those of you, who are volunteers. Today is International Volunteer Day! As a Soldier On volunteer, I gain a wonderful sense of purpose from my voluntary role as it enables me to HELP those in the veteran community. If you're unsure why you should become a volunteer, here a few key benefits: 1. It provides a sense of belonging - it's a great way to promote strong social networks. To connect with your tribe or community helps to build positive relationships and in turn creates strong bonds of trust and cooperation. 2. It can improve your physical and mental health and wellbeing - when we're helping others, we're more likely to feel good about ourselves which is a positive contributor to our mental health. When we're feeling mentally well we're more likely to feel physically well too! 3. Generosity leads to greater happiness - when we 'give' our brain releases it's 'feel good' oxytocin and vasopressin - sometimes called 'the helpers high'. 4. You can lift the mood of people around you - if a person is feeling positive and enjoying the process of giving, it's highly contagious with others. 5. It will increase your sense of satisfaction with life - having a sense of purpose and meaning, volunteering provides these in spades! We feel good about ourselves when we're doing good to and for others. If you'd like to consider a volunteer role with Soldier On Australia please click on the link below to connect with others who share your passion and purpose. #volunteering #veteransupport #soldieron #passionandpurpose #strongertogether

In Haiti, more than half a million children are out of school (per UNICEF). Gang violence, closed schools, lack of support and resources, and high inflation are contributing to this education crisis. The social impact will be felt for generations to come. That is why Lifeline has schools in Haiti. Over 1,200 Haitian children are learning, exploring, developing thinking, practicing leadership skills, and being encouraged by caring teachers. Today's efforts will raise up and empower Haiti's future teachers, engineers, pastors, artists, health care professionals, civic leaders and more. Learn more at lifeline.org/elevate-kids.
