Re-Wilding The new term to transform your property into a haven for birds, bees and butterflies. Small properties can contribute with pollinator and rain gardens. Large properties can simply reduce mowing areas to get started. Adding groups of native shrubs and a few trees, will provide the shelter and food needed for nesting. A natural habitat consists of a tree canopy, understory shrubs, ground covers, wood edges and meadows. ‼️ Many mangrove restoration projects jump straight into planting Rhizophora sp., a mid- and low-mid mangrove species, in the wrong spots. This often fails or, at best, produces stunted mangroves. Spend a moment, lift your head up take a deep breath and imagine what could be. Today is World Rewilding Day and in the UK there are nearly 70 pioneers trying something different. Most of them are larger estates, but not all. -Some along the coastline, like the Community of Arran Seabed Trust and the Sussex Kelp Recovery Project. -Some in the mountains and hills such as the Gilfach reserve in Wales, -In other places, landowners have decided to throw in the towel with agriculture and explore a new way of harvesting their lands productivity, such as Knepp in Sussex. They all have different motivations for rewilding their land. Some want to reinstate imposing species that used to roam our countryside -Beavers -Boar -Bison Others will be thinking about the less fashionable, smaller species. The ones that we rarely see. -Kelp -Scallops -Seagrass and Oysters Each and every Rewilding project creates the opportunity for us, Jo Public, to visit and see how the land might be. If we allowed it to flourish. Nature at its most productive. -It's even better than this.  -Many of the coastal projects have the added benefit of being huge Carbon sinks. -They help fish stocks recover. One of the 1st things I learned in my job at Wetlands International is that mangrove restoration is not the same as planting a bunch of trees and hoping for the best. Like all ecosystems mangroves are complex and the conditions need to be just right for restoration to be successful. Want to know more about how restoration can work, check out the video below.

MNL, along with project partners City of Brainerd and WSB Engineering, began work on a restoration project for the City of Brainerd in fall of 2023. This project was near the local high school and adjacent to the Mississippi River. The goals of the project were to stabilize the riverbank to halt erosion and provide critical aquatic habitat. Rivers and streams are under threat all across the United States and restoring them requires a lot of thoughtful bioengineering. MNL selected the right materials to ensure a successful restoration. Locally sourced toewood was used instead of riprap to stabilize the banks and create natural habitat for fish and other aquatic creatures. Boulder clusters were carefully placed in key locations to simulate a natural streambank formation and restore the natural flow of the channel, further reducing erosion. Finally, after the riverbank had been reformed, native seeds and live plants were installed to further enhance the site's ability to support wildlife and create healthy root systems that also serve to control erosion. Projects such as these highlight just how MNL shows integrity and craftsmanship in everything we do. We don't take shortcuts or use materials that are cheaper just to save on cost. We don't source seeds or plants from unknown or exotic sources because we understand the importance of native plants and their ability to produce food and habitat for wildlife as well as grow deep roots that enhance and stabilize soil. That's why cities like Brainerd, MN choose MNL when they take on a project like this riverbank restoration. We've been restoring riverbanks, just like this Mississippi River project, for over 25 years and we're not slowing down. A very timely insight on why Random planting of mangroves is bound to fail as a restoration measure. Sustainable restoration requires careful study of the environment in which the replantation processes are being initiated.
