"Disability is mentioned in a tokenistic manner in political manifestos; it doesn't feature in debates or speeches, or even the agendas of political leaders as they get elected". From “Nothing about us without us” to “Nothing without us”. I argue in this excellent piece by Neerja Deodhar in the Mid-Day today that it’s time political parties have disability cells just like they have for gender, youth, caste and religious minorities. https://lnkd.in/gt2jXStd #Vote4Accessibility

Don't Blame Quota System for the Actions of a Few The recent allegations against IAS probationer Puja Khedkar have reignited the debate around the disability quota system. While these accusations are serious, it's crucial to avoid generalizing and blaming the entire disabled community. As I discussed in my interview with Newslaundry the quota system is a vital step towards ensuring equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities. We must remember the case I filed against cricketers for mocking people with disabilities – a stark reminder of the challenges faced by this community. Instead of scapegoating individuals, let's focus on addressing the systemic issues that lead to such incidents. Building a truly inclusive society requires us to create an environment where everyone has a fair chance to succeed. #disabilityinclusion #equalrights #ias #upsc

Around the world, disabled people are fighting for political representation. In the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, members of the December 3 Movement are running for office as well as advocating for more accessible elections. https://lnkd.in/d9YCJcbX Disability rights groups in Tamil Nadu have released the Manifesto For and By Citizens with Disabilities with key demands encompassing budgetary allocations, health insurance, sociopolitical inclusion, climate change, gender, education, and more: https://lnkd.in/gTjfzk_J Among those demands: mandating a 5% reservation for disabled individuals in all local government bodies. From one disabled candidate: “We need disabled people in decision-making positions so that they can formulate policies for the physically and intellectually challenged." #DisabilityRights #Inclusion #EqualRepresentation

📗Very interesting and useful report “Gender equality and disability inclusion. Guidelines to address the specific needs of women and girls with disabilities” was published by Asian Development Bank in May 2024 - 👇 https://lnkd.in/dSJGCq_a 🔸️The purpose of these guidelines’ preparation was to inform about key issues that create barriers for #women and #girls with #disabilities in development programs and to provide an understanding of strategies to #empowerwomen with disabilities in their roles as community members, family members, workers, and leaders in all aspects of society. 🔹️This publication will be useful for representatives of governments and civil society in strengthening #gender- and #disability-responsive #development, in particular, in addressing the needs, concerns, and empowerment of women and girls with disabilities in the #infrastructure of #water, #sanitation, and hygiene (#WASH); #urbandevelopment and #transport; the #social sectors of #education, #health, and #social protection. ❗👉Follow us on LinkedIn Edu4Bis B.V.

Another week, another book read☺️ I recently read ‘Disability in South Asia’ by Anita Ghai, a renowed disability rights activist in India. In her seminal work, Ghai offers a critical examination of the intersection of disability, gender, class, and culture in the South Asian contexts. This lens of situating disability within the society challenges both colonial and postcolonial perspectives. While reading the book, I could locate the systemic exclusion and everyday challenges of disabled individuals quite explicitly. For researchers like me, this book is invaluable in exploring the intersectionality of disability and cultural identity. Ghai’s scholarship encourages a deeper reflection on inclusion, equality, and the politics of representation, making it a must-read for everyone📖💯 #DisabilityinSouthAsia #AnitaGhai #DisabilityRights #DisabilityandCulture #DisabilityandGender #DisabilityandClass #EqualityForAll

It's fascinating to learn about the similarities and differences that disabled people around the world face when it comes to political inclusion India and the United States have different legal frameworks. Neither country can claim that they are better than the other on sociopolitical inclusion of people with disabilities. The United States never ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, while India did, but India still struggles with compliance. United States has the Americans with Disabilities Act, which is considered to be one of the most comprehensive disability rights laws, but even 30 years after its passage, compliance with the ADA is a big challenge, including in our electoral processes and places. In India, people with hearing and speech disabilities were barred from running for elected office until 2012. Both countries have laws that bar people with mental health and cognitive disabilities from full political participation. Both countries struggle with politicians who use ableist language. What do we have in common? Disabled people who are fighting for equal access and equal participation. While we have different cultures, political systems, and solutions for improving accessibility and disability representation, we can learn from each other and cheer each other on as we fight for disability rights.

Rainbow Disability Nepal (RDN) https://lnkd.in/d3mmVJxa has been leading LGBTI Disability rights movement in Nepal since 2019. Understanding #LGBTQIDisability Some studies have even proposed that the traumatic effect of discrimination and rejection on #lgbtqcommunity people’s mental and physical health can itself be considered as disability. #DisabledLGBTQ+ people who live at the #intersection of these two identities can face compounded #discrimination and #stigmatization, and it is important for those who serve, interact with, and love and care for those individuals to understand this complex dynamic. #outrightinternational #rdn #unwomen #rainbowdisabilitynepal #unfpa #EAF #iamremarkable #undp #uncrpd #disabilityinclusion #disabilitypride #diversityandinclusion #socialmedia #queercommunity #fpa #ada #nfdn #linkedinconnections #nepal #constitutionofnepal

So Number 10 Downing Street has promised to work to provide BSL interpreters for its major press conferences and briefings from this spring. A win for disability rights? Not likely. It was the very least the Government should have done to support the deaf community during the Covid pandemic. Other governments did it from day one. So the Government has pledged to reinstate funding for disabled people seeking to get into elected office. A victory for inclusion and democracy? Not a chance! There were two previous incarnations of this funding, introduced by the two preceding administrations which were scrapped after their general election wins. We believe the Government’s Disability Action Plan is nothing but old news and rehashed promises that cannot possibly hope to make a tangible difference to the day-to-day lives of our community. If you see it as yet another missed opportunity to tackle the issues that are truly disabling us too; join us in supporting the Disabled People’s Manifesto. https://lnkd.in/ebTQH4rs #DisabledPeoplesManifesto #Equality #Inclusion
