If you’re looking for an organization to support with your 3 T’s (time, talent, treasure), I highly recommend considering LCS. Bridging the gap between the public and public services is the most critical function a nonprofit organization can have to ensure we are still leveraging public resources as much as possible before supplementing with philanthropy.

Healthy Black Families - Episode Two: Health Investments for Berkeley The possibilities for improving health justice and equity are vast when there is an authentic partnership and inclusive engagement of community based advocates and organizers. Today is the first day of National Public Health Week! The theme for today is Civic Engagement, which they define as "Civic engagement, the actions that we and our communities take to identify and address problems, shapes our opportunities to be healthy. By taking actions to get more civically engaged, like voting, we exercise our right to make decisions about our communities, like whether our neighborhoods have walkable sidewalks, how much funding goes to reproductive health clinics in our states and how prepared the nation’s infrastructure is for future pandemics and disasters." https://lnkd.in/gRmyiz_d

As we celebrate Civic Health Month, we're excited to welcome Lindsay Ford, Executive Director of The Voter Network, to the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund’s Pioneers in Health podcast. In episode five, we explore the importance of voting to a healthy democracy and building healthy communities. At the nonpartisan Voter Network, Lindsay and her team provide effective tools and resources to increase voter participation and make voting easy. At the Health Fund, increasing voter engagement - and the work of The Voter Network - is important because increased voter participation is associated with better health outcomes, reduced unemployment and lower recidivism rates. We also know that people who vote are more likely to volunteer, stay informed, interact with their neighbors, and contact their elected officials. Lindsay also shares that relational organizing, work supported by the Voter Network’s Voter to Voter Program, is one of the most effective ways to increase voter participation. New Hanover County Health and Human Services recognizes the profound significance of Juneteenth, a day commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and celebrating freedom and resilience. This historic day reminds us of the ongoing struggle for justice, equality, and true freedom in our society.   Juneteenth not only marks a pivotal moment in history but also highlights the enduring impact of systemic disparities and inequities, including those within the healthcare system. The legacy of slavery and subsequent racial discrimination has contributed to persistent health disparities that disproportionately affect Black communities. As we honor Juneteenth, we also bring attention to the importance of health equity and the need to address these disparities.   Health equity ensures that everyone, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or background, has access to quality healthcare. This principle is at the heart of our mission at New Hanover County Health and Human Services. We are dedicated to confronting and eliminating the systemic barriers that prevent equitable access to healthcare for all.   James Baldwin once said, "Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced." This powerful quote inspires us to confront the systemic issues that contribute to health disparities and to work tirelessly towards a more equitable healthcare system.   On this Juneteenth, let us reaffirm our commitment to health equity. Last month, Dr. Daniel Arteaga, Dr. Arthur Hong, and Dr. Hussain Lalani published a research letter in JAMA Internal Medicine on a "Trainee-Led Intervention to Motivate Resident Physician Voter Registration". The results of their pilot were overwhelmingly positive – among the 191 eligible voters in the residency program, over 99% registered to vote. Since two of the primary tools in the “Prepare” phase of the Intervention – one of five steps Dr. Arteaga et al outline as necessary to establishing a nonpartisan, physician voter registration program – were created by Civic Health Alliance and Vot-ER, we want to uplift the ongoing resources, events, and webinars from both nonprofit organizations. Civic engagement, the actions that we and our communities take to identify and address problems, shapes our opportunities to be healthy. By taking actions to get more civically engaged, like voting, we exercise our right to make decisions about our communities, like whether our neighborhoods have walkable sidewalks, how much funding goes to reproductive health clinics in our states and how prepared the nation’s infrastructure is for future pandemics and disasters. A recent analysis of civic engagement and state health outcomes from 1996 to 2020 showed that in states where people are more civically engaged and vote more, public health outcomes are better. Another analysis, the Health & Democracy Index, showed that states with more inclusive voting policies and fewer barriers to voting have better health outcomes. States with restrictive voting policies have worse outcomes. These barriers to voting also worsen existing health disparities, like disparities in infant mortality. https://lnkd.in/gZPk5qyD

This day reminds us of the ongoing journey toward equality, particularly in healthcare, where structural racism impacts the Black community through higher rates of maternal mortality and reduced life expectancies. NPWH is committed to changing this narrative by focusing on: - Education & Resources: We are dedicated to providing Women’s Health Nurse Practitioners (WHNPs) with forums and resources that help address and overcome the impacts of structural racism on health outcomes. - Continuing Education: NPWH is committed to promoting equity in women’s and gender-related healthcare through practice and policy strategies focused on diversity and inclusivity. We design educational programs to equip WHNPs and our attendees with necessary skills to recognize racial biases effectively. - Advocacy: We actively advocate for policies at local, state and federal levels that eradicate systemic racism and improve the social determinants of health.
