As we commemorate Juneteenth, let’s reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s powerful words: "For more than a century of slavery and another century of segregation, Negroes did not find mass unity nor could they mount mass actions... But in the last decade, Negroes united and marched. And out of the new unity and action, vast monuments of dignity were shaped, courage was forged, and hope took concrete form." Dr. King's observations remind us of the critical role of class and mass actions in the fight for equality. These mechanisms allow marginalized communities to unify, amplify their voices, and challenge systemic injustices. June 19, 1865, marked the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in the Confederacy, a pivotal moment in the journey toward justice and equality. For those of us working in law, Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder of the progress we have made and the ongoing commitment required to uphold justice for all. #Equality #Justice #CivilRights #Juneteenth

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s stamp on our nation will forever symbolize leadership, courage, and hope. As we continue to face racial inequality and the dismantling of DEI initiatives across our country today, we must reflect and recognize the historical achievements of Dr. King – a visionary figure in the American Civil Rights Movement who played a pivotal role in working toward racial equality and social justice. Dr. King's words and powerful acts of nonviolent resistance, grassroots organizing, and civil disobedience were the driving forces behind accomplishing so much for African Americans in the United States during the 1950s and 60s. His legacy of radically advocating for racial equality, social and economic justice, and being a champion for progressing humankind will continue to be significant in our country’s history. Dr. King moved our nation forward with his activism, and we will always celebrate his fight for civil rights. Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Reflecting on Privilege and the Ongoing Struggle for Equity 🕊️ This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I am reminded of the privilege I carry as a white woman and the responsibility it entails in the ongoing struggle for equity. Today is a day to honor not only Dr. King's legacy but also the tireless work of Black activists who continue to lead the fight for fair treatment and opportunity for all. Recognizing my privilege means understanding that the journey towards equity is far from over. It requires listening to, supporting, and amplifying the voices of those who experience these disparities firsthand. Black activists today are at the forefront, continuing the work that Dr. King began, breaking down systemic barriers and advocating for true equity. Their efforts remind us that equity is about recognizing and addressing the different hurdles various communities face. As someone who benefits from systemic advantages, I believe it's crucial to actively engage in dismantling these injustices. This includes educating myself, challenging inequities, and using my position to advocate for change. Today, I reflect on how I can better support the fight for equity, inspired by the current leaders who champion this cause. Today it is exactly 60 years since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his speech as part of the "March on Washington", one of the largest movements of the time. He had a dream. The dream of equality, of nonviolence in action and speech. The dream of kindness and humanity. However, the March on Washington also had a clear message: WE DEMAND! An end to discrimination. Equal treatment. Freedom and jobs - a way out of poverty and opportunities for economic security. An uncompromising demand and deep need for change. Today marks exactly 60 years since the stones started rolling. Where a spark ignited a fire that mercilessly contributed to the birth of the Civil Rights Act 1964 and the Voting Rights Act 1965, and which continues to burn unceasingly. Let's change the world! This is the motto of the Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies at the University of Rhode Island, which teaches nonviolence according to the principles of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. The Institute was founded by Bernard LaFayette Jr., an associate of Martin Luther King Jr. and back then co-organizer of freedom protests. By sheer coincidence, today I also had a phone call with my wonderful colleague Paul Bueno de Mesquita, Ph.D. - Professor of Psychology and former Director of this Institute for #Nonviolence and #Peace Studies. Paul, who believes in such change and has invested in it for many years. "What can I do on my own?" say 8 billion people. Sometimes one is enough. One who knows what they stand for, what they demand. One who works for peace and justice. Passion can move mountains - when one starts. Others will follow.
