An inner knowing that you can’t ignore. At 22 I moved to Amsterdam, I knew no one, my family were in disbelief that I’d decided to move to another country, fresh out of uni with very little money, no plan and no income. I had no rational reason to move to Amsterdam that made any sense to anyone. But I had an inner knowing that this was the right place for me to be. I fell in love with Amsterdam and I felt Amsterdam loved me. I was surrounded by creative people who worked for themselves, doing what they loved, creating what they wanted. I didn’t know it at the time but I had chosen to live in a city full of creativity with an energy that makes you feel like anything is possible. Amsterdam gave me the freedom to be me. I knew to be me, I had to design and create with no boundaries but my own, with no design briefs set by other peoples ideals. I know this meant starting my own business. It took two years for me to design, build my first business. I took my first collection to Paris at the age of 24 and before I knew it I was selling my work across Europe, America and Asia. By the time I was 26 I had 800 stores selling my collections across the world and I had designed exclusive collections internally renowned design stores in London, NYC, Paris and Tokyo. You just know there is no other way. To be me I had to start my own business. #founders #youjustknow #startup

I love my city. I mean, I really love it. I’ve lived here all my life and I’ve got the streets signs of all the London offices Propel has leased over the years (5 in total) on my wall at home - you will see from the photo of my home gym below. These are more than just street names, each one holds hundreds of stories. They are victories, defeats, laughter, tears, memories and the experiences that shape who I am today. London’s streets are written on my wall and written on my heart. In just the last few months I’ve been lucky enough to spend time with tech entrepreneurs in Helsinki, have an amazing dinner in Munich, see the ground breaking tech cluster in Liverpool and rediscover Amsterdam with a fresh perspective. And that’s just a few of the cities I adore, but I hope you’ll excuse a little bit of love for my home town. What’s prompted all this? Well, this week I’ve been at London Tech Week, which brings thousands of tech innovators, founders, investors and talent from over 145 countries together in London. I’ve spoken to people from all over the world, all of them excited about the UK’s tech industry, and London in particular. What makes a great city? Is it the restaurants, the architecture? A nice river running through it always helps. No, it’s the people. And that’s perhaps why I feel a special buzz, because I’m a Londoner, I’m one of those people who make up the city, and when I see my city show itself off like it has this week, I can’t help but feel a real swell of pride. That was what so many people said to me, London is where they find the people to help their business grow, and the talent to take them to the next stage. This week I learned London is home to more software developers than any other European City, and that London startups raised $12.9bn dollars in 2023.
