In an era where the urgency of addressing global challenges has never been more pronounced, Open Science emerges as a pivotal force in propelling us toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By fostering transparency, accessibility, and collaboration, Open Science breaks down traditional barriers to knowledge, creating an inclusive platform where researchers, policymakers, and communities can converge to drive impactful solutions. This paradigm shift not only democratizes access to scientific knowledge but also ensures that the insights gained benefit all, particularly marginalized and underserved populations. Yet, to harness the full potential of Open Science, it is imperative to tackle the existing disparities between high-income nations and low- and middle-income countries, which often struggle with limited access to research resources. Through concerted efforts to enhance capacity-building initiatives and promote equitable resource sharing, the scientific community can leverage Open Science as a catalyst for transformative change. By aligning our collective endeavors with the principles of Open Science, we can ignite innovation, drive informed decision-making, and ultimately pave the way for a sustainable future where the fruits of research are shared equitably among all humanity. Let us commit to this essential movement as we strive for a resilient and inclusive global community. This data-based scientific discourse is by Chew et al., illustrating that a concerted effort is necessary to build capacity, promote transparency, and facilitate collaborative solutions, which can optimize resource use and address the complex challenges facing society. In doing so, OS holds the potential to significantly impact all 17 SDGs by 2030, driving inclusive and sustainable development through innovation and shared knowledge.

In the wake of the evolving landscape of research and innovation, the concept of Citizen Science emerges as a pivotal force driving engagement, collaboration, and societal impact. As we navigate through Horizon Europe's 2nd Strategic Plan and anticipate the forthcoming Work Programme for 2025, it becomes increasingly evident that harnessing the power of citizen engagement is essential for realizing the ambitions outlined in Horizon Europe. Citizen Science, as endorsed by the European Commission and encapsulated within the Horizon Europe programme, represents a paradigm shift in research and development. It champions a multi-actor approach, inviting citizens to actively participate in scientific endeavors, from data collection to analysis, thus democratizing the scientific process. Within the framework of Horizon Europe, Citizen Science serves as a catalyst for social readiness, fostering inclusivity, transparency, and trust in research and innovation. The webinar aims to explore the concept of Citizen Science, examining its implications, challenges, and opportunities. It commences with a policy panel featuring a representative from the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD), who will provide insights into the strategic vision of the European Commission regarding Citizen Science. This panel will put light on how Citizen Science aligns with the objectives of Horizon Europe, contributing to the creation of a dynamic and participatory research ecosystem.

April is #CitizenScience month! 🌐 Citizen science highlights the important role citizens play in science and research by gathering first-hand information on a variety of topics including health, climate, energy and more! Their input and active participation in the process helps scientists develop new knowledge and innovations that impact society and policymaking. However, small-scale national citizen science projects often face practical, technical, or conceptual challenges and lack the support, the transnational coordination skills, and the resources, to upscale their efforts to a transnational level. 💡 That is why ScienceUs is on a mission to create an EU-wide network of interconnected citizen science projects where citizens actively contribute to addressing climate change challenges through science. 🌱 Are you a member of a citizen science initiative that focuses on the adaption of climate change? Join the ScienceUs project! Find out more on our website ➡️ https://lnkd.in/d4GPtTP7

𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗬𝗼𝘂: 𝗔 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝙎𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚, 𝙉𝙤 𝙁𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 Townhall meeting Our #EGU24 Town Hall was a thrilling journey into a galaxy far, far away—well, not quite! We delved into the critical topic of Open Science, using everyone's favourite space saga, Star Wars, to explore the challenges and opportunities facing scientific progress. The Force was strong with our panel of high-level scientists and open science advocates. They bravely challenged the "Empire" of traditional scientific practices, where intransparency, a lack of standardised formats, and limited data sharing reign supreme. These practices, along with a system that prioritises publications and impact factors over collaboration, stifle the true spirit of scientific progress. Just like the brave young rebels fighting the Death Star, a new generation of scientists needs to rise and champion Open Science. But fear not, young Padawans of research! The European research infrastructure landscape is brimming with resources to empower your open science initiatives. ENVRI-Hub (www.envri-hub.eu), in particular, will offer a central gateway to all environmental data provided by the European research infrastructures within the ENVRI community.
