Partners in PROMISE would like to recognize Silver Star Service Banner Day on May 1st. Silver Star Service Banner Day is for Americans to recognize and remember service members who have been wounded in combat, are sick, and who are dying. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the Silver Star Medal is the third-highest medal a member of the Armed Forces can receive for gallant action during combat. The U.S. Army normally awards the distinguished medal as the "Silver Star," while the Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard award the medal as the "Silver Star Medal." All branches of the military give the award as a result of action against an enemy of the U.S. during the conflict over a short period, normally one or two days. How can you recognize Silver Star Service Banner Day: 1. Attend a local veteran organization or military base event honoring Silver Star personnel and families. 2. Display your Silver Star Service Banner outside your home or business. 3. Volunteer to help at a local event honoring Silver Star recipients. 4. Celebrating Armed Forces Day today, the day to honor all who serve or have served in the United States branches of the Department of Defense, both active-duty and former, in the reserves, National Guard or on active duty. Armed Forces Day was created on August 31, 1949, by Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force commemoration Days, following the Armed Forces’ unification under one Department of Defense by President Harry S. Truman, when he signed the National Security Act into law on July 26, 1947. The United States Marine Corps, a branch of the United States #ArmedForces, is responsible for providing power protection from the #sea using the mobility of the United States #Navy to rapidly deliver combined-arms task forces. The Continental #Congress first established the Continental Marines on November 10, 1775, leading up to the American Revolution. Two battalions of Marines fought for independence both on #land and at #sea. The birth of the U.S. Marine Corps began as a way to augment naval forces in the Revolutionary War. The recruiting headquarters was in the Tun Tavern on Water Street in #Philadelphia, which is considered to be the birthplace of the Marines. The Corps was abolished at the end of the Revolutionary War. However, on July 11, 1798, Congress ordered the #creation of the Corps, named it the United States Marine Corps (#USMC) and directed that it be available for service under the Secretary of the Navy. The #USMC shares many resources with the other branches of the United States military. However, the Corps has sought to maintain its own identity with regards to mission, funding and assets while utilizing the support available from the larger #military branches. Medal of Honor Monday: Sergeant William H. Carney Sergeant William H. Carney, born into slavery in Norfolk, Virginia 1840, became one of the most remarkable figures in American military history. Escaping the bonds of slavery through the Underground Railroad, Carney later joined the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, one of the first Black regiments to fight in the Civil War. On July 18, 1863, during the assault on Fort Wagner in South Carolina, Carney's courage was unparalleled. As the color bearer carrying the American flag, he faced relentless enemy fire. Despite being wounded multiple times, Carney never let the flag touch the ground. He planted it on the fort's ramparts and, even as the battle raged on, carried it back to his regiment, ensuring it remained aloft. Carney's commitment to the flag and his fellow soldiers was extraordinary. His actions symbolized the fight for the Union and embodied the struggle for freedom and equality. Despite the grave personal risk, his bravery under fire is a testament to his steadfast dedication to his country and his belief in its ideals. Sergeant Carney was finally awarded the Medal of Honor in 1900, nearly 37 years after his heroic actions. The delay was due to the slow bureaucratic processes of the time, compounded by the racial prejudices that often overlooked the contributions of Black soldiers.
