In the wake of doping controversies from the Tokyo Olympic Games, a new dispute has arisen at the Paris Games. Italy’s Olympic Committee (CONI) has filed a complaint regarding the decision in the gold medal match in which Hong Kong foilist Cheung Ka-long triumphed over Italy's Filippo Macchi. The president of CONI has publicly expressed strong dissatisfaction with the referees' decision, sparking debate due to the referees' origins from South Korea and Chinese Taipei - regions in proximity to Hong Kong. This situation prompts an important question: if a similar incident were to occur in a competition based in Hong Kong or the APAC region, what effective mechanisms would be in place to ensure a fair resolution of the dispute? In this article, Patrick Chan, Clement Chui and Able Au explore ways forward in driving the initiative for a dedicated sports arbitration system in Hong Kong to serve the needs in the APAC region. In the wake of the excitement (fatigue for some!) from the Paris Olympics, my team and I explore Hong Kong's potential to be a leading sports dispute resolution hub in the APAC region. Hong Kong is developing its own sports arbitration mechanism, potentially by establishing: its own centre (perhaps modelled after Switzerland’s Court of Arbitration for Sport); a Hong Kong branch of the China Commission of Arbitration for Sport; or a mechanism with existing institutions such as the HKIAC. Hong Kong has a unique edge over its APAC counterparts, as it is one of the most preferred seats for international arbitration; has an established common law framework; and has a range of reciprocal arrangements in arbitration with Mainland China. There is therefore no reason why the world city of Asia could not evolve to take on a leading role in sports arbitration. Rome wasn’t built in a day, as the saying goes, and with the Asian Games 2026 fast approaching, now is the time to expedite this evolution. What Is Overseas Basketball Like There is no single play style in Overseas Basketball. In fact, depending on the region you could have significantly different types of games. For instance: Europe = High IQ & strategic Latin America = 1v1 & fast-paced Middle East = 1v1 In this case, Chinese teams - and Asian countries - typically play faster with lots of scoring opportunities. This was, indeed, the case when we played in China. Granted, this was against Chinese University Basketball Association players (known as Cuba). But the same is usually true for CBA & NBL teams in China. And remember, many CUBA players graduate to play in the CBA and NBL. Regardless, know the play style before entering your market. The biggest football event in Africa (a continent of over 1.4 billion people) kicked off yesterday in Côte d'Ivoire with many of the stars who play in Europe and elsewhere on parade, and I have surfed most of the global sports platforms such as BBC Sport, Sky sport, ESPN, Warner Bros etc, but none has the African football showpiece on it's headlines. Only South Africa-based Supersport has focused on the 2024 AFCON. This summarizes how the rest of the world view what happens in Africa.
