Have you seen this study? We are so thrilled to share the abstract: Parlez-vous français? Or how the Dutch teenagers can really learn to speak and write in French. This research is about the effectiveness of a special method for French as a second language in high school. After years of frustration and complaints, many French teachers started implementing the AIM method from Canada in the three first years of high school. With AIM, French is spoken close to 100% of the time by means of stories, plays, songs and gestures. But above all, AIM has a very clever way to teach French without grammar or word lists. Even more remarkable, the teacher speaks only French and makes everything clear with gestures! By placing so much attention on speaking skills students are motivated to use the language. And it works! This study has followed 229 students for three school years. Five different schools from different parts of the Netherlands have participated. The results of this study show that this method is more effective than the methods mostly used in the Netherlands. You probably had a French Teacher in Primary School who would use English to teach and explain everything that's supposed to be taught in French, as a French Teacher, you're most likely doing same. Your reason would usually be that the pupils will not understand so why even go through the stress. Here's what I've learnt as a language teacher, as kids, language is one of the easiest things to catch but the reverse is usually the case as adults except maybe in case of immersion (living in the language environment). We speak our native languages without anyone writing it, or sitting in classes. What happened differently as kids? Our brains consciously and subconsciously pick phrases and sentences, by extension their meanings as time went on. As language teachers in "a non supportive language environment", one of the easiest ways to get kids to understand is by speaking, use gesture if need be but speak in the language more often. I propose you use classroom phrases like: -Est-ce que vous comprenez ?: Do you understand? -Parle à haut voix!: Speak louder -Je vais lire et vous allez répéter après moi: I am going to read and you repeat after me. Repeat it as much as you can in every class session, they might not be able to speak as you do, but their brains subconsciously register the phrases and by extension the meaning, when they hear it somewhere else, they know! A brilliant hack to improve English vocabulary- way better than just consuming English content and looking up the meanings of unknown words. My scores in English had been consistently poor till the seventh standard. My English teacher had advised me to improve my vocabulary back in the day, but it was the old-school method. He had asked us to read English content and note 5 new words from there in a notebook. He had also told me that the notebook would be used for grading and that no credits if words were taken from the dictionary. Unfortunately, the latter happened. I realized that this solution works for very consistent individuals over a very long period. Luckily, I found another route to accomplish the goal much faster. It was understanding how Latin and Greek roots have the lion's share in contributing to the modern English lexicon. I studied those roots and even played around with them to generate new words like agorasomonoloquacious, odontokleptophile etc. Although after studying French, I feel French has the highest contribution to the English lexicon. However, an analysis will reveal that mostly Latin entered the English language in a French route. Studying the origin of words through Latin and Greek roots not only helped me to learn and remember them but also developed a skill to predict the meanings of new words. Other than accents, did you know there are two versions of English? I was once corrected for having the wrong pronunciation in English by someone who couldn't speak English! A French teacher at my old school thought that the book version of English with standard pronunciation for language learners was really how native speakers speak... So he thought that all native English speakers spoke incorrectly including native speaking English teachers! This is a common trap for language learners. I fell in it when I learned French and I escaped it when I learned Spanish. I try to help all my students avoid over sanitized English as well. The picture of Spock from Start Trek is to represent this French teacher who was so logical that he completely missed the point. You probably don't have time to waste, so don't waste it learning the wrong thing. See English language learning materials as training wheels to abandon as soon as possible and get listening to legal podcasts for native English speaking lawyers etc. as soon as possible. ”Dear language teacher, not every student in your class is interested” They say time flies but it seems this time, it did more than fly, it vanished! 😳😅 My session as a teacher this summer ended today, and I have mixed feelings about it.🥹 I'm happy because I can now primarily focus on my thesis research, but also a bit sad because I'll miss teaching before students. God knows I enjoy teaching. 😊 This final week has been so eventful.☺️ I know that a vast majority of my students take my course out of obligation, not necessarily out of interest. So, my basic goal at the start of the semester was to help them “love to learn French”. I can proudly say, to a great extent, that the goal was met! 💃 One major way this was achieved was by integrating students' interests into the learning process. This week, we experienced Haitian cuisine in class, savoring Griot and Diri Djon Djon. Additionally, a supposedly quiet student delivered a remarkable performance of the French opera "La Fille Du Régiment." We concluded the semester with a screening of the film "Cyrano De Bergerac." I feel fulfilled. Seeing my students engage and find joy in learning French has been the highlight of my summer so far.
