Wildly illuminating. “Currently, climate finance is overwhelmingly debt-based. In 2023, Oxfam estimated that over 90% of climate finance from multilateral institutions, such as the World Bank, was in the form of loans. Low- and middle-income Countries (LMICs) simply cannot pay off these loans. The International Monetary Fund reported in 2022 that 60% of low-income countries were in or at risk of debt distress.” Achieving equitable climate adaptation and resilience will require a drastically different way of viewing capital allocation and deployment.

Do the rich have a moral duty to help fix the climate crisis? I had no trouble answering this on Sunday Morning Live today. Of course they do. The wealthiest in society have contributed most to causing dangerous #climate change and other damage to safe living conditions on Earth. And the wealthiest in society have the most ability to fund the rapid action this emergency requires. The richest 1% of people in the world:— - own 43% of global financial assets; and - emit as much #carbon as the poorest 2/3 of people. We can’t rely on #philanthropy or impact #investment to do this.
