An interesting Op-Ed by the new owners of United States Steel Corporation, Nippon Steel. You can see from the comments that people are on both sides of the argument - both for and against allowing this merger to happen. But allow me to share some of my own feedback gleaned over the years from working with some of the largest steel buyers in North America. US Steel, until fairly recently, has not been recognized as best in class. (We will leave that to Nucor Corporation ) What does that mean? It means that buying organizations know that they have more "hand" with US Steel vs. US Steel competitors. There is an old joke a large steel buyer likes to say, "You can always count on US Steel to do the wrong thing." Many large steel buyers in America have told me that over the years. That said, I'd commend the current Executive Team of US Steel and CEO David Burritt for shepherding the company particularly since it's "smart" acquisition of Big River Steel. But capitalism is capitalism and a merger was probably always in the cards for US Steel. Nippon is an extremely well run, highly regarded company. Many many companies in the US import from Nippon because the quality of their metal is so high. This deal ought to go through - US Steel, its workers and customers stand to gain from the innovation and leadership their new owners can provide. Disclosure: I do not own any shares in US Steel or Nippon. For more of MetalMiner's insights, sign up for our weekly newsletter: https://lnkd.in/eDYjDrbq
In an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal, Nippon Steel President and Representative Director, Mr. Eiji Hashimoto, Executive Vice President and Representative Director, Mr. Takahiro Mori, express their commitment to preserving American jobs and growing U. S. Steel in the United States. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eiXqphPe

*Tata Steel UK Announcement* Good Morning Tata UK announced yesterday it is to push ahead with the closure of its blast furnaces at Port Talbot. Unfortunately some of the 3000 expected job losses are expected to start in April with the bulk to go by September. As a result of this Tata will now import slab and hot rolled coil in accordance with the UK quotas. Its current method of steel production which involves making new steel in blast furnaces will cease. Tata announced in September last year a plan to change to a new type of furnace which uses electricity rather than fossil fuels to power the melting of scrap steel - This plan to build new electric arc furnaces (EAF) and will take up to 4 years. Trade unions will now consult it's members on potential measures, this will probably include strike action. This will no doubt cause supply disruption and further increases in steel prices. USP Steels Ltd position has not changed and will not be effected. We will continue to develop our excellent relationships with our long established supply partners SSAB and thyssenkrupp. This week alone we have increased our purchasing by ordering a further 12kts on top of the current 87kts we have in stock and on order. The decision to increase our purchases was made off the back of the Tata announcement and continued supply issues globally, as reported in our most recent market update newsletter. sales@uspsteels.com www.uspsteels.com Ryan Baraks Gabe Jones Greg Hawkins Chris Woodman Kiran Chauhan
