If you are interested in access to tertiary education for vulnerable populations, this report is for you. #USAID #Advanceprogram implemented in #Guatemala, #Honduras, #Jamaica and the #DominicanRepublic came to an end this year. "Over the course of eight years of implementation, the Advance Program worked hand in hand with faculty and staff, administrators, technical specialists, and students at 12 HEIs across the four countries, building strong relationships and institutional trust that allowed the Program to facilitate locally owned and locally led institutional capacity development across five areas to achieve the Program’s expected results. All in all, the Program supported partner HEIs to develop or revise 22 technical degree programs, which enrolled 11,509 students during the period of performance, and from which 2,192 students graduated. A Critical look at Teacher Recruitment in South Africa: The need for Prioritizing Qualified Graduates: The Department of Basic Education's recent approach to solving the teacher shortage crisis in South Africa by hiring temporary, often inexperienced teachers based more on their youth than their qualifications is a precarious strategy that undermines the quality of education. Yet, the chosen method risks long-term damage to our educational standards. During a 2021 roundtable discussion on the state of education in South Africa, I talked over that the Department of Education should consider the integration of assistant teachers to facilitate parallel teaching. This strategy aims to enhance classroom dynamics and make use of the skills of trained but unemployed education graduates eager to step into their professional roles. This approach would not only alleviate the workload of current teachers but also create essential job opportunities for qualified educators, effectively bridging the gap between academic theory and practical application in classrooms. Unfortunately, recent actions by the Department show a significant shift away from such targeted initiatives. In prioritizing the hiring of younger individuals (assistant teachers), potentially without the necessary teaching qualifications, the Department overlooks a significant pool of educated, yet unemployed, graduate teachers. This choice not only marginalizes these qualified individuals but also risks degrading educational standards and student outcomes in our schools. There is a critical need to revisit and rectify these hiring practices. Unemployed graduates, who have dedicated years and significant resources to their education, represent an untapped resource that the Department should leverage more effectively. These individuals often bring a passion for their profession and fresh, innovative ideas that could invigorate our education system. Recommended actions for the Department of Basic Education recruitment should prioritize the recruitment of qualified graduate teachers to ensure that classrooms are led by knowledgeable and skilled educators. This move will enhance educational outcomes and uphold the integrity of our educational standards. Long-term Planning: Adopt long-term educational planning that anticipates future needs and aligns with demographic changes and advancements in educational theory and practice. This strategic foresight will prepare the education system to handle upcoming challenges more effectively. I can say it is imperative to the future of South Africa’s educational landscape that the Department of Education reevaluates its current recruitment strategies. By focusing on qualification and preparedness rather than age, we can build robust educational system that is equipped to provide high-quality education to the generation of leaners.

Current Education Challenges in Kazakhstan: What Can We Do Thinking about the current state of the education system in Kazakhstan, I want to highlight these points: Educational Inequality: There are significant differences in the quality of education across regions and schools. This calls for strategies to ensure equal access to education for everyone. Remote Learning: The pandemic made it clear that remote learning is not just a temporary measure, but an important part of our education system. Its development is crucial. Lack of School Places: Right now, there's a serious shortage of places in Kazakhstani schools: 250,000 students are attending school in third shifts. There are concerns that by 2025, this number might rise to 1 million. This urgently needs attention and investment in school infrastructure. Competition and Safety: The growing popularity of foreign online schools poses a challenge to our national education. It's important to strengthen our programs to stay competitive. Digital Transformation: The digitization of education is becoming increasingly important. It helps make learning more accessible and personalized. We face a number of challenges, but also opportunities to improve the situation. We need to focus on raising the quality of education, developing infrastructure, including building new schools, and emphasizing online education and digital solutions. This will allow our education system to be more adaptive and accessible to everyone.

The event, which is themed “Education As A Tool For Intercontinental Development,” is scheduled to take place on the 24th of January 2024 at 10 am via Google Meet. Hon. Comrade Sunday Asefon (GCNS), the Senior Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on Students Engagement, will serve as the Chief Host for the event. In a statement, the Technical Assistant on Communication in the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on Students Engagement, Amb. Timothy Nwachukwu, said the International Stakeholders Dialogue aims to bring together key players and decision-makers in the education sector from around the world to discuss the pivotal role of education in fostering intercontinental development. As the world continues to face complex challenges, the dialogue seeks to explore how education can serve as a catalyst for progress and prosperity on a global scale. In Morocco, like in many countries, there are various needs in education that are essential for the development of the nation and its people. Some of the key areas of focus include: Access to Education: Ensuring that all children, regardless of their socio-economic background, gender, or geographic location, have access to quality education. This includes addressing barriers such as poverty, lack of infrastructure, and cultural norms that may hinder children from attending school. Quality of Education: Improving the quality of education provided in schools by investing in teacher training, curriculum development, and educational resources. Emphasis should be placed on promoting critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and digital literacy to prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century. Equity in Education: Addressing disparities in educational outcomes among different regions and social groups. This involves targeted interventions to support marginalized communities, including rural populations, girls, and children with disabilities. Technical and Vocational Education: Strengthening technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programs to equip young people with the skills needed for employment in various sectors of the economy. This includes collaboration with industry partners to ensure that TVET programs are aligned with labor market needs. Higher Education: Enhancing the quality and relevance of higher education institutions to foster innovation, research, and entrepreneurship. This may involve expanding access to higher education, promoting international collaboration, and improving the employability of graduates. Digital Literacy: Integrating technology into education to enhance learning outcomes and prepare students for a digital future. This includes providing access to computers, internet connectivity, and digital learning resources, as well as training teachers to effectively use technology in the classroom. Language Skills: Strengthening language skills, particularly proficiency in Arabic, French, and English, to facilitate communication and participation in the global economy. Curriculum Reform: Updating the curriculum to reflect current societal needs, promote cultural diversity, and instill values of tolerance, citizenship, and environmental sustainability. Teacher Recruitment and Retention: Improving teacher recruitment, training, and support systems to attract and retain qualified educators, particularly in remote and underserved areas. Parental and Community Involvement: Encouraging parental and community involvement in education through initiatives such as parent-teacher associations, community schools, and adult education programs.

"Within a decade, one in three entrants to the global workforce will be from #Africa. Over the next 30 years, the majority of the world’s new workers may well be on the continent. What they learn in the classroom and how they learn it is a vital question of our time...Africa needs at least 9 million new #classrooms and 9.5 million additional #teachers by 2050, according to UNESCO. And that’s only to meet the needs of school-age children and adolescents, it doesn’t address surging demand for higher education...One important sustainable way to build up capacity is to invest in #teachertraining and #empower teachers with #technology, rather than using technology to displace their work...Throughout Africa, #digitalliteracy is becoming a core part of curricula and education policies, alongside fundamental literacy. It has to – governments in Botswana, Mauritius and South Africa have all placed digital competency at the heart of their education policies...International #collaboration and #investment will be critical in realizing Africa’s potential ­– the African Union has highlighted this as we enter its Year of Education."
