At Zen, we're all about nurturing leadership skills in all our current leaders and people managers, as well as focussing an importance on developing those individuals with a natural talent, passion and commitment for inspiring others – our leaders of the future. The Aspire Development Programme, led by Jill Matley from the People Development Team, is delivered to individuals who are passionate about leadership, aiming to develop and enhance their natural qualities and develop new skills, knowledge and approaches to inspire and empower those around them —now and in the future. After the 6-month experiential learning journey, the Programme concluded with a fantastic and emotional Finale. Each participant shared their personal learning journey, showcasing significant boosts in confidence and self-awareness. They demonstrated how they've practically applied their new insights, gained a deeper understanding of personal responsibility and accountability, and explored crucial leadership topics like team dynamics and motivation to name a few. Clear development goals and aspirations have emerged, setting the stage for outstanding leadership within Zen. Many participants are now tackling more complex projects, working closely with senior stakeholders, and we’ve already celebrated a promotion. The Aspire Development Programme is truly shaping the future leaders of Zen. Last week, our leaders embarked on another chapter of the LeadForward Programme, an 18-month leadership development journey. LeadForward aims to nurture leadership skills and act as one of the foundational blocks driving personal and professional growth. This chapter focused on enhancing our leaders’ mental agility, where our teams immersed themselves in real-world challenges, navigating high-pressure decision-making and trust-building exercises guided by four essential pillars: 1. The Power of Tactical 2. Bonding Framing and Fighting Cognitive Biases 3. Defining an Ethical Framework 4. Producing Creative Solutions Under Pressure This opportunity allowed our team members to bravely explore the psychology of high-stakes negotiations which contributed to pushing boundaries and unlocking their potential further, ultimately boosting their leadership capabilities. Our goal is clear: equip our leaders with the tools to lead with confidence, both individually and as one team. We expect the impact of this experience will create ripple effects across our entire Group, sparking more leadership excellence. Updated Number 1! Recently, I’ve been conducting Leadership Coaching. As one of these engagements was wrapping up, I formulated these 7 Commitments for Womxn Leaders. Some of these ideas are old (actually, they’re ancient); some of them are newer. While the ordering is different from many I’ve seen, they reflect my firm beliefs around how and why womxn leaders lead, and how womxn leaders must take care of themselves to continue to lead. These commitments remind us that our true power is twofold: modeling how we want leadership to look and work and lifting others up - and keeping them lifted. I could write about this forever; however, I’ll save those observations for a blog post. Note what I chose for number 2. Not an accident. 1. Believe in our own power and leadership.- lead from who we are and wherever we find ourselves. 2. Take care of ourselves and help other exhausted and underrepresented people do the same. 3. Speak truth to power. 4. Be an Ally. 5. Serve as role models by being as transparent and vulnerable as possible - sharing our struggles and using our voices and power to point the way forward. 6. Recognize the unrecognized. Praise them whenever possible. Lift them up and help them stay lifted. 7. Elevate people who aren’t quite ready and ensure they are supported to reach their potential. Today I attended a fabulous multi-generational discussion panel by Salisbury's Women's Leadership Council (@wlcsby). I was struck by how many times the theme of having a supportive circle of friends came up as one of the main factors in how they stay grounded and encouraged. In leadership development, we often emphasize formal training, mentorship, and hands-on experience. But one crucial element that’s sometimes overlooked is the role of a strong circle of friends in shaping effective leadership skills. Trusted friends serve as sounding boards, offering honest feedback and helping us navigate challenges that refine our leadership approach. Great leaders don't exist in a vacuum; they are nurtured by the people around them. A supportive circle of friends can provide critical insights and fresh perspectives, challenge us to think bigger, and encourage us when we face setbacks. They help us reflect on our decisions, hold us accountable to our goals, and offer valuable advice in moments of uncertainty. As you work to hone your leadership abilities, remember that the people you surround yourself with matter. True friends can inspire you to grow, push your boundaries, and keep you grounded. They can help you see not just where you are, but where you're capable of going. Leadership development isn’t just about what you learn—it’s also about who you learn with.
