Join us this morning Wednesday February 21st with Erin Robson at SLR Consulting for Protocol 2 Site-Specific Numerical Soil Standards – Key Tips and Common Misconceptions at 10am PT Since Version 2.0 of Protocol 2 took effect in November 2017, the use of site-specific numerical soil standards developed using the BC Groundwater Protection Model has certainly grown, but it hasn’t become as widely adopted as might be expected. Many practitioners managing sites in areas with lower infiltration rates have caught on to its benefits, but generally only to adjust that single input. Why is that? Most likely, it is due to the number of possible variables available to adjust, and a lack of understanding of the impact of each on the resulting standards. In 2023, CSAP funded a study, conducted by SLR, to look at the impact of adjusting key inputs, with the goal of helping practitioners better understand how these inputs influence the resulting site-specific numerical soil standards. This presentation will include a brief overview of those findings, as well as some insights into common pitfalls that practitioners may fall into along the way. Another great video of Hans Smit, CEO of Moana Minerals Ltd, explaining the environmental and biological studies being conducted in the #CookIslands in strict compliance with the regulatory requirements of the exploration licenses issued last year for a small area in the country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ). These extensive studies are designed to fully assess the economic, social, and environmental aspects of potential development and provide the scientific data necessary for the government to determine if development can be done in a manner that protects the environment. Early indications and studies conducted thus far have demonstrated that this could be one of the largest and most dense sources of polymetallic nodules containing #cobalt, #nickel, #manganese, #copper & #rareearthelements #REEs in the world. Along with minimal biological activity at these depths and favorable life-cycle #GHG emissions from offshore development, these resources could potentially be one the most environmentally friendly options for securing the #criticalminerals & #batterymetals needed for expanded #electrification to counter the threat of #climatechange. To meaningfully address difficult challenges like #climatechange, a lot of serious people will have to do a lot of hard work. Hardwork guided by, and contributing to, scientific discovery and understanding is what is going on in the Cook Islands. The Cook Islands government, the regulators, the developers, and the scientists and engineers associated with this project deserve a lot of credit for all of the thoughtful work that has gone into comprehensively studying this resource and its potential development. I do love the opportunity to attend specialist #cpd events to broaden my knowledge and further the visibility and reach of BAM Ritchies (BAM UK & Ireland) The Extractive Industry Group (EIG) event was fantastic. Excellent organisation, excellent venue, great presentations and engaging exhibitors. How do we transition in the Mineral, Aggregate and Quarrying industry to a low carbon, sustainable future that can be resillient to the impact of climate change. As pointed out "Its not the depth of flood thats important its the frequency" There is pressure to automate, electrify and decarbon quarries but the infrastructure at a lot of quarry sites cannot support that so the first step is to make Quarries leaner through increased efficiency, production and output. These improvements unsurprisingly reduce carbon and save money delivering easy win/win opportunities for the quarry operators. Bio diversity net gain and nature based solutions are the legacy of quarries, we just need to understand the long game instead of looking for short term answers. There was plenty more going on in the day and lots of people to catch up with, so make sure you attend in the future.
