Nurturing West Africa's Food Future: A Local Approach In West Africa, a shift is underway towards a more resilient and sustainable food system, one that relies less on costly imports and more on locally sourced nutrition. This movement isn't just about what we eat it's about reimagining the entire food landscape. By embracing indigenous crops like cassava and promoting sustainable farming practices, communities are reducing reliance on foreign foods and supporting local farmers. Governments, civil society, and the private sector all have roles to play in fostering this change through policies, awareness campaigns, and investments. Success stories abound, from Ghana's support for smallholder farmers to Senegal's embrace of agroecology. At the grassroots level, communities are taking charge of their food futures through initiatives like community gardens and farmers' markets. Ultimately, building a sustainable food future in West Africa isn't just about feeding people, it's about building resilient communities and safeguarding cultural heritage. With determination and collaboration, we can nourish both people and planet for generations to come. #foodsustainability #foodfuture #foodsystems #westafrica #ghana

Today on #WorldFoodDay, themed “Right to food for a better life and a better future,” we recognize that food security isn't just about addressing immediate hunger - it's the foundation for lasting peace and stability. With 2024 projected to be the hottest year on record, our collective action has never been more crucial. At Bayer, we're dedicated to empowering farmers worldwide with innovative solutions that boost productivity and resilience. Smallholder farmers - about 550 million globally - are pivotal in feeding our growing population. By supporting them, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, we promote inclusive growth, reduce poverty, and enhance food security in vulnerable regions. We're proud to be part of initiatives like the TELA maize project in Nigeria, helping farmers adapt to climate challenges with drought- and pest-resistant crops. Our collaboration with Niger State aims to increase yields by up to 50% and create 100,000 jobs, all while advocating for regenerative farming practices that benefit both people and the planet. Achieving food security will require collaboration and the implementation of bold innovations. And advancements can only make an impact if farmers are empowered with the right tools while regulatory frameworks allow for their adoption. On this #WorldFoodDay, we reaffirm our commitment to build resilient food systems and ensure that innovation reaches the fields, helping secure a future where everyone has enough to eat. #WorldFoodDay #FAO #FoodSecurity #ZeroHunger #SDGs #Sustainability #ClimateAction #HealthForAll #HungerForNone

How rural communities are revolutionising food security in Ghana and Kenya 🌍 Across Africa, droughts are jeopardizing rural livelihoods by threatening food security, reducing incomes, and displacing communities. Yet, local innovators are rising to the challenge with creative solutions to build resilience during dry seasons. In #Ghana, an organization is transforming dry-season farming with solar-powered water pumping and village savings and loan programs. They equip farmers with tools, seeds, and training to grow vegetables and fruits even in the driest months. Meanwhile, in #Kenya, a local innovator is developing a cost-effective, sustainable meal product using local leaves, herbs, and mineral salts for dairy goat keepers. This breakthrough is enhancing livestock productivity, improving food security, and boosting local incomes. Ahead of #WorldFoodDay, let’s celebrate these innovative approaches which are paving the way for stronger, more resilient communities across the continent. I had the privilege of moderating the Farmer’s Forum at the recently concluded Africa Food Systems Forum in Kigali, an event that brought together over 5,000 delegates, including representatives from the African Development Bank, the World Food Programme, civil society, and the private sector. This year's summit focused on transformative solutions for Africa's food systems, emphasizing the critical roles of youth and women in agriculture. Engaging discussions highlighted innovative approaches to enhance food security and nutrition across the continent. The participation of diverse stakeholders underscored the importance of collaboration in addressing the challenges facing our food systems. Together, we explored actionable strategies to mobilize investments and foster sustainable agricultural practices that can uplift communities and drive economic growth. Central to these discussions was the vital role of smallholder farmers, who produce up to 80% of the food in many developing regions and support the livelihoods of approximately 2.5 billion people. Despite their significance, smallholder farmers face numerous challenges, including limited access to resources and technology. However, with increased support and investment, they can significantly contribute to feeding Africa and driving economic growth. Their commitment to sustainable practices, such as agroforestry and crop diversification, positions them as key players in building resilient food systems. As we move forward, it is imperative that we continue to engage in these vital strategies and implement the insights gained. The future of Africa’s food systems depends on our collective commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability. #AfricaFoodSystems #FoodSecurity #SustainableAgriculture #Collaboration #Innovation #4Betters

Food insecurity, hunger, and malnutrition affect a significant portion of the population in the Philippines, particularly women and children. In rural and coastal areas like Sitio Hagmang, these challenges are exacerbated by climate change, rising food costs, and high levels of unemployment. To support more sustainable and reliable food access, KASAG, a women-led organization committed to improving food security in their community, piloted a food distribution program for malnourished children and implemented a cyclical rice loan. Through capacity building training from OPI, KASAG used KoboToolbox to gather essential data, allowing them to make informed decisions regarding their initiatives and measure the effectiveness of their impact. KASAG’s comprehensive community-based programming tackles both immediate nutrition gaps and fosters long-term wellbeing for local families. With access to reliable data and accurate insights, they can address critical food security issues in their community and advocate for future data-driven initiatives.
