October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and for us it holds a deeply personal meaning. We were young mums when we were diagnosed with breast cancer, juggling mum life, and chemo appointments all at once. It’s a journey that was filled with challenges, but also resilience and courage. This month, we will be out in the community sharing our stories to raise awareness. While it's often seen as something that affects older women, the truth is that young people can be diagnosed too. It's World Cancer Day. This year, the Alberta Cancer Foundation is shining a light on the economic challenges of facing a cancer diagnosis. Once diagnosed with cancer, an individual could require medical and specialized care for months (if not years). A recent study concluded that the economic burden of cancer in Canada, including travel and accommodation costs, parking, out-of-pocket expenses and income loss averages, could be be as high as $2,500/month per patient. It's particularly challenging for those who have to travel far distances for treatments, which is frankly the reality for many. That's where the Alberta Cancer Foundation Patient Financial Assistance program comes in. It's to provide a little boost for those facing a difficult cancer diagnosis who might have to travel for treatments, arrange child care or perhaps lose employment income. Entirely funded by generous donors, it's all about Albertans helping Albertans.
