From my 40+ years of college teaching experience, I've been frequently asked about the key quality an effective teacher must possess - beyond subject knowledge and technology integration. While those are crucial, the humanity aspect of education stands out. In my view, a good teacher is one who treats students with respect, understands their roadblocks, offers support, and challenges them respectfully. Being a good human being first defines effective pedagogy. It's about empathy, connection, and nurturing growth in students. So, when pondering what makes a great teacher in statistics and mathematics, remember the essence of humanity in education. It's not just about what you teach, but how you make students feel valued and supported on their learning journey. #Education #Teaching #HumanityInEducation

It’s fascinating—and a bit concerning—that the metrics often used to gauge a professor’s success (think grants and published papers) don’t necessarily reflect their ability to actually teach and engage with students. Shouldn’t the true measure of a faculty member’s competence also include how effectively they can foster a learning environment that inspires and educates? I believe it’s time we broaden our perspective on what academic excellence really means. Should we start putting more emphasis on teaching prowess and less on publication frequency? This shift could lead to more meaningful educational experiences for students.

Can a standardized test accurately measure a student's critical thinking? With all the media attention on standardized academic testing these days, educators, parents, and students are rightly concerned. Since we've been working on this for many years, we thought it might be helpful to clarify a few things. First, what is standardized testing of critical thinking? Second, how do we evaluate that? And third, how is standardized testing of critical thinking best used to promote a student's academic success? Check out https://lnkd.in/gRkmCazq #education

The recent spotlight on evidence-based reading instruction has lead to a considerable misunderstanding of what science of reading is and is not. Dr. Sharon Vaughn, PhD, Endowed Chair in Education at University of Texas at Austin clarified and corrected many misconceptions during a recent presentation, specifically: • effective reading instruction is based on SoR but is not just one specific curriculum • learning to read does not occur just through exposure - learners need explicit systematic instruction and many opportunities to read and to practice with support • it is a misconception that learners just need more time to learn to read • most students do best with an organized approach to reading and differentiating instruction for a range of learners is necessary • phonics isn't the only component of reading instruction and many teachers are not prepared to teach this component • referring to pictures to decode words is problematic but pictures can be used to promote engagement and comprehension • authentic texts expose students to increased vocabulary, syntax and background knowledge and there is no evidence that using decodable text is superior to authentic text. • students should have practice reading a variety of text types across a variety of levels and leveled texts can provide that. • the 3-cueing system is not an evidence-based practice. All students need to be able to read words • reading outcomes are better when phonemic awareness is taught with letters https://lnkd.in/gDCpbNbY #ScienceOfReading #SoR #ReadingInstruction #K12Education #LiteracyInstruction
