Specialist vs. All-rounder - which one are you? Sometimes I wonder if I should have stayed in one lane… I’ve had the following roles: -TV Scheduler, Media Planner, Listings Editor, Senior Editor, Marketing Copywriter, Freelance Brand Writer, Editor-in-Chief, Head of Content, Content Consultant and Head of Editorial. 😱 That’s a lot - right? Q. Should I celebrate all these skills, experience, and sector knowledge and own that? Q. Or should I focus on one area? 🎯As a specialist, I would be: -Highly knowledgeable in one area with an easier learning path -More easy to find online -Market value is higher is there’s a shortage -Harder to challenge in my decision making Yet I would also face: -Greater challenges if I wanted to change role -May get bored of same old and lack of variation -If market is saturated, I would struggle to stand out 🌈 As an all-rounder, I have these qualities: -An eye for the bigger picture, so a good candidate for leadership -Can take on varied and highly demanding tasks -Can choose my specialist field as market changes -Wide range of knowledge and flexibility But my issues are: -Knowledge is too broad -Job applications may not convince due to the lack of expert knowledge -Always lots of competition and less visible in searches -Market value of skills lower without unique selling point   🤷🏻 So, should I own the all-rounder attitude or get laser-focused?
