Many are surprised to learn that “non-profit” CEOs are Vistage members. Or, as Jim Collins refers to them, “social sector enterprises,” a more befitting description of the businesses that these CEOs are leading. As this article points out, for-profit businesses have much to learn from their social sector CEO counterparts. Especially the focus on mission or purpose which is at the core of all that they do. Something which the for-profit world can sometimes lose sight of. There is one social sector CEO in my Vistage group (so far), and he always ask questions that get to the heart of a fellow member’s purpose or “why.” There are other lessons that can be gleaned from these enterprises and their CEOs as well, and this article does a great job summarizing them.

Well it's about time we saw THIS headline: What Business Leaders Can Learn From the Nonprofit World. The world of command and control leadership is not cutting it in corporate America - employees expect to be heard, expect their companies to have values and live em. Sure there is hierarchy but corporate leaders today can feel it - their power is not just assumed. Those of us in the nonprofit sector have led like this since well since forever because we know our power as leaders comes from all around us - that we need to engage with our staff, board, donors and key stakeholders as invested partners in the important work we do. For our latest Good Scout Group article, Andrew Davis, a nonprofit board consultant I highly respect, and I teamed up to identify the two key factors we want nonprofit boards and nonprofit leaders to take action on today to further organizations and mission effectiveness. Our takeaways are this: Action-oriented board engagement and radical honesty in leadership. I share how leaders often grapple with internal barriers, such as outdated practices or personal biases, which can stagnate necessary change or growth. By embracing radical honesty—questioning long-standing practices and being open to constructive feedback—we pave the way for adaptability that is required to evolve. This openness is crucial for enhancing effectiveness and driving meaningful change. Similarly, Andy identifies how nonprofit boards traditionally act as stewards, prioritizing safety and preservation. While caution can be understandable, it may lead to a cycle of analysis over action, which can hinder rather than help.
