🚨 Research note of the WEEK! 🚨 Faith-based Fundraising and Engagement in Post-Communist Czech Republic 📄 In the Czech Republic, religiosity is decreasing, and distrust in church institutions is on the rise. Despite this, volunteerism and revenue have consistently increased for Caritas Czech Republic’s primary fundraising initiative. This study explores religiosity and trust in the church in the context of fundraising and volunteerism for faith-based organizations in post-communist Czech Republic. Caritas Czech Republic’s door-to-door Three Kings Collection (TKC) fundraiser communicates a religious message yet has increased volunteerism and revenues annually. One reason for success may be that Czech society can distinguish between institutional church distrust and the social services Caritas provides. Read the letter below. It’s gut wrenching to see how much of instituions’ reponses are guided by the fear of losing funding, reinforcing broken and inequitable structures of power and capitalism. Let’s keep demanding transparency and accountability regarding donations and how much power donors have over the utilization of the funds. Especially when it comes to colleges and universities. Institutions that stay silent because of money are not really committed to education. They are committed to donors and profit. They do one thing here and there, hire and tokenize people of color to look progressive and inclusive, but their systems are still guided by a broken logic that benefit and few a enable the continuation of inequities. They profit off of inequities and this has to stop. NOW. Well, education should never be privatally owned anyway, but that’s a conversation for another day. Education is a human right, so should have a decades-long debt to get educated?
