🚨 Self-Sacrifice = Burnout & Escalated Risk 🚨. Short term hero and a long term villain? In healthcare, boy is it easy for self-sacrifice to become the norm. But let’s be clear: when self-sacrifice becomes routine, burnout—and with it, escalated risk—follows closely behind. A system that depends on people staying late, cancelling personal plans, or doing admin on non-working days leaves little room for health professionals to breathe. Worse yet, it can result in healthcare workers becoming emotionally overwhelmed by the trauma they witness. But what if we reframe the conversation? What if, instead of glorifying self-sacrifice, we equipped people with skills to set boundaries that protect their well-being—and ultimately the safety of their patients? 💡 1) Boundaries of MY TIME We’ve all been there: arriving early to clear emails, staying late to finish the to-do list, or logging back on after putting the kids to bed. But no matter how hard you push, the work never ends. Setting a boundary of time sends a powerful message: I value my own needs, I need rest, and I will come back better tomorrow. 💡 2) Boundaries MY SPACE Whether it’s the relentless pinging of work WhatsApp messages or answering emails on your days off, making yourself constantly available only invites more work into your life. By respecting boundaries of availability, you're practicing self-compassion—and reinforcing the idea that your personal time is non-negotiable. 💡 3) Boundaries of MY FEELINGS It’s impossible not to be affected by the suffering we witness in our patients. But without emotional boundaries, that empathy can quickly turn into emotional exhaustion. Empowering health professionals to acknowledge and express their feelings—rather than bottling them up—creates a safeguard against burnout. Emotional resilience isn’t weakness; it’s survival. 🛡️ By valuing and protecting your time, availability, and emotions, you’re more likely to have a long, thriving, and safe career. Its probably the most selfless thing you can do! Let's stop romanticizing self-sacrifice—because it comes at a cost, and that cost is too high. Dont be a Short term hero and a long term villain! #NHS #wellbeing #boundaries #MentalHealthInHealthcare #BurnoutPrevention

HOW TO KEEP MOTIVATED AT WORK AFTER A CRITICAL ILLNESS RECOVERY. Focus on your performance and contributions: Demonstrate your value: Highlight your achievements, positive contributions, and commitment to your work. Focus on exceeding expectations and delivering consistent results. This can help earn respect and recognition, even if management doesn't fully understand your health concerns. Maintain professionalism: Avoid dwelling on your health issues with colleagues or management unless it directly impacts your work. Focus on keeping communication work-related and maintaining a professional demeanor. Find a mentor or ally: Having someone within the company who believes in you can make a big difference. Prioritize your health: Manage your health condition as effectively as possible. This may involve attending appointments, following treatment plans, and getting enough rest. Remember, your well-being is essential, and taking care of yourself will empower you in the long run. Remember: You are not alone: Many employees face challenges related to health and work. Don't be afraid to seek support. Your worth is not defined by your health: You are valuable and deserve respect regardless of your health condition. Focus on your strengths and contributions, and don't let others define your worth. You have options: If the situation becomes untenable, consider exploring other employment opportunities where your health concerns are better understood and accommodated. It's important to weigh your options and choose the approach that best suits your individual situation and personality. While navigating this can be challenging, remember that you deserve to be treated with respect and have your well-being considered. Take care of yourself, advocate for your needs, and focus on what you can control yourself - your #performance and #wellbeing.
