Susan has over 25 years of experience enhancing and leading talent acquisition programs and teams. She’s a sought-after speaker on podcasts, webinars, and at industry conferences. We asked Susan some questions so she can share some #HealthcareRecruitment wisdom. What’s your best advice for healthcare recruiters who are just starting out? “When working with a new hiring manager, do your research about the work and role, but never let your ego get in the way of asking a question. Most hiring managers are more than happy to talk about what they do and will appreciate your desire to understand the work beyond what’s listed in the job description. It shows full engagement in the work, supporting them, and helping them find the right people to work on their teams. That builds both trust and your own credibility.” How do you stay updated with the latest trends in healthcare recruitment? “Plug into networks not just in healthcare as most recruiting trends aren’t industry-isolated. Google “healthcare recruiters network” (or just “recruiters network”) to find national and local organizations that might be a good fit for you. Connecting with other healthcare recruiters is a phenomenal way to check to see if others are experiencing the same things (99% chance they are!) and share ideas on how to solve those challenges. These folks aren’t hard to find – LinkedIn is full of them and most are more than willing to connect. Have commute time or good at multi-tasking? Subscribe and listen to one of the many healthcare (or general) recruiting podcasts out there. So many great ideas being shared! I’d also recommend subscribing to Becker’s email alerts to stay current on what’s happening in healthcare in general. That enhances your ability to have those meaningful conversations with your managers and might also alert you to potential candidate pools.” What qualities do you admire in a TA leader? “I appreciate TA leaders who share the story of Talent Acquisition within the organization in a transparent way that both increases credibility for the TA team and creates understanding that Talent Acquisition is not solely the responsibility of the TA team. After all… the easiest recruit to get on board is the one who is already working for you. Retention is just as critical as talent acquisition in solving our workforce challenges, and having that dialogue right up front is beneficial for all. I also love TA leaders who celebrate their team’s wins as belonging to the full team, ignite passion within their teams by helping them understand the bigger impact of the work they do, and are consistently focused on developing skills and competencies while removing barriers. All of this ultimately helps make the work more satisfying and more personally meaningful.”
