🧠 Did you know that neurodegenerative illness is now the most common reason for hospice referral in the US? Last week, Remo’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Meredith Bock presented at the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine conference, where she shared results from a first-of-its-kind study research that investigates hospice usage patterns among Medicare beneficiaries with Lewy body disease, a rapidly growing form of dementia. Dr. Bock talked about the challenges faced by individuals with neurodegenerative illnesses within the traditional hospice model that’s designed primarily for cancer patients. ➡ Why does this matter? ➡ It leads to high rates of dis-enrollment and complicated transitions of care, which created burdensome transitions of care for people with dementia and their families. She identified distinct hospice utilization patterns among different dementia subtypes, underscoring the need for tailored care approaches and more data from novel dementia care management models (such as Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’s #GUIDEmodel) to see if these better match the palliative needs of people with LBD and other neurodegenerative illnesses. #dementia #dementiaresearch #lewybodydisease #GUIDEmodel #CMS #hospice #palliativecare

Tomorrow, October 9th, 2024, Dr. William Mansbach, will partner with LeadingAge PA to present, 'Reducing Late-Day Confusion in People with Dementia: An Innovative and Practical Approach'. This webinar is free to LeadingAge PA members. Non-member rate is $80. Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are very common in residents with dementia. Perhaps the most challenging types are those that occur as part of the sundowning (late-day confusion) syndrome. Currently, there are very few intervention models that demonstrate success in reducing symptom frequency and severity. Too often, the primary (and often only) intervention is medication-based. While medications are often necessary, they are generally not sufficient. This presentation will discuss the interprofessional model and present evidence of its effectiveness using a clinical case. Healthcare staff, clinicians, and leaders working with residents with dementia should find this presentation to be highly innovative and practical. Register here: https://lnkd.in/eVPcY6nF
