The 2023 Farm Bill

The 2023 Farm Bill

Who Faces Hunger in The United States?

Hunger can affect people from all walks of life. Millions of people in America are just one job loss, missed paycheck, or medical emergency away from hunger. But hunger doesn't affect everyone equally - some groups like children, seniors, Black, Indigenous, and other people of color face hunger at much higher rates. Hunger also most often affects our neighbors who live in poverty.

Many people facing hunger are forced to make tough choices between buying food and medical bills, food and rent and/or food and transportation. This struggle goes beyond harming an individual family’s future, it can harm us all.

Hunger and health are deeply connected. People who are food insecure are disproportionally affected by diet-sensitive chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, and according to research, food insecurity is also linked to many adverse effects to overall health.

Healthy bodies and minds require nutritious meals at every age. But when people don’t have enough food or have to choose inexpensive foods with low nutritional value, it can seriously impact their health. And once the cycle of poor diet and poor health begins, it can be hard to break.

Every five years or so, Congress takes up a massive piece of legislation known as the farm bill, which covers everything from supporting farmers to ensuring that those short of food don’t go hungry. The cost of the bill is nearly $100 billion a year. Right now, Congress is in the middle of the farm-bill cycle again. While the Senate is close to a vote on a bipartisan measure, the far more partisan House version of the bill put forward by Republican leaders was voted down last month. The next move is anyone’s guess.

The farm bill is the most significant piece of legislation for farmers and our food supply. It plays a critical role in protecting farmers’ livelihoods and making sure Americans have safe, nutritious food, including by supporting those facing hunger. The farm bill gives farmers and ranchers the tools they need to keep our farms and food supply secure and sustainable.

The farm bill matters for all Americans because we all depend on the success of American agriculture. The farm bill plays a pivotal role in ensuring a secure food supply, creating jobs, promoting sustainability, managing risks, and addressing food insecurity. It impacts everything from the land we grow our food, fiber and fuel on, to the farmers growing it, to the wellbeing of all who rely on these American grown products.

It is our decision. Let congress decided how to feed hunger people or let us all decide what is right. Let your representative know how you feel. It is important for every American.
