25/40 Shirley

As part of our Forty Stories campaign to highlight the stories of the people behind our buildings, we talked to Project Manager Shirley Lutz, PMP about her Suffolk experience and volunteer work. Here’s what she had to say.

How did you get started in construction?

I was always told that I couldn’t do construction as a woman at my age, but I had older guys in the field who were willing to teach me. They’d drag me out of the trailer and say, “You need to see and learn this.” Once I got a feel for the industry, I knew it was what I wanted to do. I love being in the field to see buildings come to fruition. My first projects were new military facilities and Department of Veteran’s Affairs Hospitals in Hawaii, Washington, D.C., Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. I did that work for six years before I came to Suffolk.

How did that experience influence your role at Suffolk?

I felt like such an outsider when I started in construction as a woman. I never wanted that feeling for my teams. So, I try to make it an atmosphere where they can talk to me about anything. And they do — I’m the mother bear of the office. It’s an honor. I want a place where everyone feels like family, where we live the core values of this company. We're going to be working on projects together, so I think the more you get involved with the people you work with, the better communication and mindset you’ll have. No matter what, I'm going to have their back.

We have a lot of young people in the Dallas office, and there’s a lot of cross-mentorship. I’m constantly asking questions about what they’re learning, and I take it personally to make sure they're ready for this career. I want them to tell me what they need so they're getting to that next step on their career path. Honestly, I get just as much from people as they think I’m giving them.

What do you like most about working at Suffolk?

For me, it’s the integrity of the people I work with, and I appreciate that Suffolk prioritizes volunteering. We’ve been involved with local soup kitchens, toy drives and of course the 22KILL and One Tribe Foundation events. Because Suffolk is relatively new to Texas, it gets us out there and shows we practice what we preach.

Why is it important to you to support veterans’ causes?

Almost everybody in Texas has someone in their family who served, so we’re all on board when it comes to supporting first responders or veterans. The Suffolk team participates in the Memorial Day parade, and we'll be at the Carry the Load rally because it ends in Dallas. It makes us realize how much we’re all connected.
