3 health and wellness benefits employees need now
If you want a healthy workplace, you need to give employees the tools, and make sure they actually use them. Here's how:
STRATEGIZE FOR 2025: HR teams face no shortage of challenges, but healthcare is likely the problem they can never seem to solve. From rising benefit costs to an increasingly uncertain regulatory landscape, HR teams have their work cut out for them.
For a third year in a row, health benefit costs jumped past the decade-long average of 3% per year, with 2025 predicted to see a 5.8% increase in benefit costs per employee, according to consulting firm Mercer . Unsurprisingly, 53% of employers plan to alter their plans, including raising deductibles, which would mean higher out-of-pocket costs for employees. In the midst of a never-ending loop of higher costs and worse benefits, now more than ever, HR teams need to break away from the status quo and rethink their approach to healthcare — but where do they even start?
START SMALL: Information overload is an issue when it comes to navigating benefits, especially as employers expand from core offerings such as healthcare, dental and retirement, to include more voluntary benefits in areas like financial, physical and mental wellness, supplemental insurance, and more.
The solution to these challenges requires a multi-pronged approach that breaks benefits education into smaller pieces, says Jesse Albro , VP of national accounts at Flimp , which provides employee benefits communications and educational content. The platform's 2023-2024 open enrollment report found that when 235 of their employer clients incorporated video, text, "digital postcards," which are infographic-style microsites with helpful links, and QR code access to educational content, they achieved an average of 70% engagement rate with benefits information. The average time an employee spent on content per visit was just over a minute.

TACKLE CHRONIC CONDITIONS: For Ellen Rudolph , co-founder and CEO of virtual care platform WellTheory, there's no greater place to start than looking for solutions that target autoimmune diseases and other related chronic conditions.
"Autoimmune patients are a top cost driver for every employer we work with," says Rudolph. "They drive about 30% of total pharmacy spend and 50% of specialty spend for a typical employer. We wanted to create a solution that would really be a win-win for the patient and the employer."
WellTheory just launched their Hormonal Health Program, which is a benefit designed to support women navigating hormonal imbalances or conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, hypothyroidism and menopause. While these conditions aren't autoimmune in nature, Rudolph couldn't ignore the connection between immune system dysregulation and hormone imbalances, two conditions that disproportionately affect women.

While organizations are focusing on reducing and taming healthcare costs, amplifying the perceived value of benefits is equally important. Empathy-driven HR strategies, real-time engagement, and tailored solutions are essential to both engaging employees and giving them the resources they need. Investing in holistic wellbeing programs that emphasize mental health, financial wellness, and work-life balance can make a significant impact. Effective annual enrollment messaging, onboarding, and benefits analysis can turn benefits into a net positive for retention and acquisition. Personalized health plans, healthcare analytics, and chronic condition management programs help employees navigate their benefits effectively, leading to better outcomes for both employees and employers.
