5 Accessories Every Man Should Put on Right

5 ACCESSORIES EVERY MAN SHOULD PUT ON RIGHT:

1. Belt

2. Pocket Square

3. Lapel Pin

4. Wallet

5. Pen

When you think about it, accessories are never really mandatory. No one’s being pushy and insisting accessories on anyone. However, the sooner you realize how big a part they play in adding personality into your outfit, the better. Apart from being functional, most accessories can also be fashionable and help you make a stellar first impression. You might have overlooked the importance of putting on the right belt, pocket square, lapel pin, wallet, and signature pen in the past, but things are about to change.

To start off, keep in mind that other than quality, suitability is equally important. For belts, you should take into consideration the buckle size, length, and material. Some belts are designed to make a statement; with oversized buckles and bright colours. So, make sure you pick the right belt that suits your work environment. The rule is, the bigger the buckle size, the lower the level of formality. Therefore, for those in the corporate world, it would be a great idea to have the buckle size about the same as the trousers’ band size. As for the length, choose a belt which is 2 inches larger than your current trousers size; one that ends between the first and second belt loop when worn, anything longer will have you looking odd and awkward. When it comes to material and colour, the common black and dark brown leather belt is perhaps the safest bet.

Next up, pocket squares! Does it have to match your tie? No. Does it have to be super fancy? No. In short, pocket squares should complement your suit and tie. It doesn’t have to be folded into fancy designs, just keep it simple and you’ll look effortlessly cool. If you are choosing a pocket square, do consider its fabric, colour, and print patterns. While you could spend a fortune getting fancy pocket squares made of cashmere or silk, you could also get cotton ones in colours and patterns that will complement your outfit. Sometimes, less is more!

Moving on, note that lapel pins are totally making a comeback! The metal pins and badges give off a military vibe that is manly and sophisticated all at once. Available in almost any design imaginable, do remember that lapel pins still fall under the category of “accessories”, which means they should accessorize your outfit, not snatch the limelight away. For formal occasions, do consider smaller and more conservative designs because they still project individuality. On the other hand, when it comes to fun and casual events, feel free to wear loud and colourful pins if that’s what you want.

While it might be true that your wallet will sit in your pocket more often than not, this should not stop you from getting the right one. A good wallet should be thin and compact, holding only your essentials. Alternatively, a money clip or a cardholder can be very useful when you don’t want to carry too many things. If you’re wearing a suit, placing your wallet in the inside breast pocket of your suit jacket is more ideal than placing them in the back pocket of your trousers.

Finally, remember that your signature pen can play a very important part in your head-to-toe look as well. Everyone has certain preferences when choosing their signature pen, so there is nothing wrong with going through different types of pens to find one that is suitable and you feel most comfortable with. A high-quality signature pen will always come in handy for signing documents and for writing, even more so if you’re always on-the-go.

Dr. Wendy Liew i have a question on wallets - there are so many types nowadays, including money clips, those minimalist-type, are there any recommendations on how to use them right? i.e. occasion specific, daily wear? etc

Out of the 5, I only use belt and of course wallet daily. I'm lucky to not have to wear a suit for my jobs daily especially in Singapores humid weather. 😅😅😅 Just wondering why wallet would matter when it's in the pants pocket all the time? I usually keep my pen in the bag too. Have never used a pocket square even when I'm in a suit. 😅😅😅 What about watch? Bracelet? Card holder?
