Audiobook Steams Ahead
There’s no getting away from it…we’re more ‘time poor’ than ever before. ‘The Golden Age of Leisure’ seems to have been transformed into ‘The Golden Age of Cramming In As Much As Possible Before You Expire’ – preferably quietly!
How marvellous it is then, to have the opportunity to escape, if only for a few short hours. The humble audiobook is the rising star of the entertainment world. Sales figures for 2018, indicate a second year of double-digit growth of nearly 25%, and one of the most popular genres, is ‘Mystery’.
In that same year, I had the pleasure of producing and narrating the wonderful and mysterious, ‘Steam, Smoke & Mirrors’ written by the delight, that is, Colin Edmonds and published by Caffeine Nights. Evocatively conjuring up a Victorian Steampunk world; it provides that much needed break from reality. The heroes are a magician and his fabulous assistant; the plot twists and turns – like a twisty turny thing….and the laughs are piled as high, as the bodies! What’s not to love?
It’s been a bit of a hit with listeners/readers.

Last month, it won the prestigious SOVAS award for ‘Best Narration of an Audiobook in the Mystery Category’. The SOVAS awards are highly prized. Presented in Los Angeles at the Warner Bros Theatre and in the past, have attracted such luminaries as Sigourney Weaver, William Shatner and James Earl Jones. Esteemed company, indeed.
