Avian Flu - A Growing Threat to North American Dairy Herds – A Cause for Concern?

Big things often have small beginnings, and the narrative unfolding here is gaining momentum. A unique avian flu outbreak among dairy cows has now impacted at least 13 herds across six US states, as confirmed by federal and state authorities. These infections mark the first instance of a highly pathogenic bird flu virus, typically fatal in avian species, being identified in U.S. cattle. Furthermore, one individual in close proximity to the affected cows has contracted the virus, likely due to direct contact with an ailing animal. Notably, the patient's primary symptom was conjunctivitis, and they are presently undergoing treatment with an antiviral medication and showing signs of recovery, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health officials are actively probing the disease afflicting mainly older dairy cows, characterized by reduced milk production, diminished appetite, and other symptoms. Additionally, there's concern that the virus present in cows could potentially transmit to poultry. While the USDA rigorously oversees avian influenza strains lethal to poultry, mandating the culling of entire flocks upon detection of H5N1 or similar variants, no such drastic measures in the US have been mandated for cow herds. 

While there are no concerns regarding the safety of the commercial milk supply or its impact on consumer health, dairies are obligated to supply only milk sourced from healthy animals for human consumption, with milk from affected animals being diverted or destroyed to prevent it entering the food production and supply chain. Pasteurization is just as effective in deactivating bacteria and viruses, such as influenza, however, as a precautionary measure, the USDA advises against consuming raw milk or related products. 

I believe Louis Pasteur in 1863 got it right and remain puzzled why 160 years on there are many high-profile influencers today encouraging the consumption of raw milk? Scotland banned the sale of raw milk and cream years ago because its long been linked to a high number of food poisoning outbreaks, such as Salmonella, Campylobacter and E.Coli O157 infection yet people still do. 

In the US and Canada dairy and beef farmers are actively implementing biosecurity protocols to prevent the ingress of H5N1 into their herds. 

Notably, in the UK, influenza A (H5N1) infection in mammals is classified as a notifiable event. Embattled UK farmers are well versed with biosecurity procedures involving controlling people and vehicular access, cleaning and disinfection, pest control and a health plan drawn up with veterinary support that includes isolation, separation, and segregation amongst other things.
