Building resilience... valuing biodiversity... through tangible actions... globally!

Building resilience... valuing biodiversity... through tangible actions... globally!

I have just returned from Melbourne, Australia, where 100 Resilient Cities and Resilient Melbourne have just wrapped a compelling Network Exchange focused on Urban Biodiversity and City Resilience. Over the course of our 3.5 days together, over 30 city actors from New Orleans, Boulder, Durban, Semarang (Indonesia) and metropolitan Melbourne had the opportunity to dive into the complex interplay of nature, ecosystem services, and the multiple benefits that can be achieved when cities incorporate consideration of both biodiversity and their interdependent shocks and stresses into their resilience-building work.

For me, the main takeaway was the focus on tangible actions that cities were already taking, and the way in which urban planners, engineers, and environmental departments were enhancing biodiversity while meeting the core needs of their councils or state's/ provinces. In Melbourne we saw regional waste water treatment and local storm water treatment each being used to enhance nesting for bird populations and even platypus. So while we did discuss the underlying tension between anthropocentric and ecocentric views of the world, mostly we got on with sharing real life experiences of building urban resilience and the success factors that enabled this to happen.

Initial outputs from the network exchange is shared below, and there is much more to come. I look forward to continuing to build on this experience with other networks and cities that are recongising the value of biodiversity in building their resilience to multiple shocks and stresses. Get in touch for more details.

Cheers
