Covering Putin's Pyongyang visit
In June, RFA Korean produced exclusive coverage of Vladimir Putin’s first visit to North Korea since 2000. The service broke the news of the Kim-Putin summit days before it was officially announced, using satellite imagery and air and watercraft tracking to identify and document on-the-ground preparations in Pyongyang.
From Seoul, RFA’s North Korean defectors provided rare news on developments inside North Korea through in-country sources. Most notably, the team revealed the country was placed under a nationwide emergency alert 10 days before Putin's visit, while Pyongyang locals were forced to clean up and decorate Russian-related monuments.
After the summit, RFA scanned Russian websites for more clues on the Kremlin’s accelerating cooperation with Pyongyang. According to the website of a Russian travel agency, Moscow has begun heavily expanding tourism to North Korea, including promoting a summer camp for children.
