Delivering Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

JSM Group Services Ltd. were appointed to complete the detailed design including cable schedules, Distribution Network Operator (DNO) substation design, auxiliary transformer design, battery sizing calculations & equipment schedule for a 21MVA Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Broaddtich, Kent.

Our collaborative approach meant the design approval was quickly obtained from both the Client and DNO.

Despite the challenges of coordinating plant installation within a constrained site, our team successfully integrated UKPN’s non-contestable works into the programme, ensuring efficient collaboration and seamless delivery through regular site liaison meetings.

Intelligently navigating site constraints, our team lifted 11 batteries, each weighing 32 tons, using a 300-ton crane after JSM reinforced the ground as per the temporary works design.

In total, 460m of 33kV cable was installed both on and off-sit to facilitate 6nr Batteries, 3nr Transformers along with the DNO and Client switch-rooms.

The 10 month project included hot and cold commissioning with energisation and As-built records.

Martyn Crocker , Head of Business Development says;

As we collectively strive towards net zero, energy storage is playing a significant role between supply and demand so projects like this are crucial. Our teams continue to showcase their expertise from feasibility through to energisation when delivering complex projects.
