Did Deregulation Help Texas Electricity Market❓

Back in 1999, is when then-Gov. George Bush signed a law that deregulated the electricity market in Texas.

So, what are the benefits of deregulations since 2001?

1)    More competition reduces electricity rates in Texas.

2)   More choices of Electricity Providers.

3)   It boosts Renewable energy (Wind & Solar)

What other factors also reduced electricity unrelated to competition.

42% generation comes from natural gas and since fracking for natural gas. The cost of natural gas has gone, thus reducing the cost of generating electricity by Natural Gas Generation plants.

So, the net results may be no better than 10% saving pre-deregulation.

So, what are the drawbacks to deregulations since 2001?

1)     The complexity of the deregulated market that the Texas Government and the PUC using outdated regulations that no longer meet the needs of protecting the general public when shopping for electricity.

a)      REPS (Utilities) knows consumers shopping for electricity shop for it as they shop for Gasoline and have used deceptive manipulation of the facts label to advertise a cheap rate.

For example, here is a letter to a prospective client who found a great rate for her home for 8.6 cents which she signed up (Please note I REMOVED HER NAME FROM THE LETTER)

Indeed 8.6 cent per kWh is a very good rate.

Name, just be careful you don’t drop below the 1000kWh threshold because you will lose out on the $85 bill credit.

Now, If you are 999kWh or below, your rate is 17 cents per kWh.

We had clients go below with the power outage back in February,

Name if your average kWh per month is 1500kkWh you will pay 17 cents per kWh=$255 less one-time bill credit $80= $175 and divide that by 1500kWh you average cost per kWh is 11.6 cents per kWh

Once again, a great rate if you are precisely at 1000kWh per month under it 17 Cents and over like 1500kwh per month it 11.6 cents

Just look at your bill at the bottom it will show you what your average rate was that month.

Well, you see, this client live in an apartment, and if she is under 1000kWh per month, she will be paying 17 cents a kWh and not the 8.6 cents that she thought she was going to pay
