Displacement linked to climate change is not a future hypothetical - it’s our current reality.

Displacement linked to climate change is not a future hypothetical - it’s our current reality.

On April 22nd, NYU-TIES joins the global community in celebrating the 53rd anniversary of #earthday. Earth Day is an opportunity to reflect on the environmental challenges upon us, and the effect they have on vulnerable communities across the globe. The climate crisis is a human crisis.

Displacement linked to climate change is not a future hypothetical - it’s our current reality.

This Earth Day, we are spreading awareness by sharing a quote and facts from refugee & migration expert and founder & executive director of Climate Refugees , Amali Tower .

Last September, Tower spoke at an All Eyes On Learning (AEoL) event co-hosted by NYU-TIES, Tauwhirotanga, and Porticus . AEoL was a 3-year (2019-2022) programme under Porticus' Education in Displacement portfolio, of which NYU-TIES was one of 18 grantees. AEoL aimed to collectively contribute towards ensuring that displaced children and children in host communities are attaining holistic learning outcomes which can support their flourishing.

Key facts about the climate displacement landscape:

🌎 100 million people are forcibly displaced by climate, conflict and violence as of May 23, 2022. This means 1 in every 78 people on earth have been forced to flee.

🌎 90% of refugees under UNHCR’s mandate, and 70% of people displaced within their home countries by conflict and violence, come from countries on the front lines of the climate emergency. As of June 2022, low- and middle-income countries hosted 83% of the world’s refugees.

🌎 1 billion children - nearly half of the world's child population - live in one of the 33 climate change-vulnerable countries.

“This situation is having a significant impact on the education and rights of children, [...] half of the world’s children are facing the impacts of climate change in these vulnerable areas, which is a major concern for their future and access to education.” - Amali Tower , refugee & migration expert and founder & executive director of Climate Refugees .

Climate Crisis is a Human Crisis. Climate change is the defining crisis of our time and disaster displacement one of its most devastating consequences.
