Electric Transition: a conflict between short time economic reason and Noble politic issue?

To be very brief it seems, at this time, that we are facing a huge choice.

Without means at short term (less than 30 years) to store electric energy the unique use of wind an solar power seems impossible.

Need to have thermal sources (nuclear, coal, gas petrol) for basic energy for the electrical network stability.

If we consider only financial reason at short time, the obvious choices is generation from coal, gas and petrol (may be from shale). No photo on this issue!

If we consider noble politic choice to save planet from greenhouse effect, the choice will be nuclear as a part of the energetic transition itself.

The question is: in a free market world, driven by short time interest and financial deregulations (sometime to create jobs and to save money), may a political power could force the immediate interest to bend (without an efficient carbon tax) in order to create the means to save planet?

Fascinating and dangerous challenge!
