OIL AND GAS NEWS
Source oil and gas locally, urges Equinor energy boss
Countries should secure supplies of oil and gas by sourcing locally, the boss of energy giant Equinor has said.
Anders Operdal told the BBC energy security should be top of the agenda after Russia's invasion of Ukraine saw supplies disrupted and prices hiked.
Equinor is the biggest investor in the Rosebank oil field in the North Sea - the largest new UK oil and gas field development in decades.
But critics say new oil fields will not make UK energy supplies more secure.
They argue a faster transition away from fossil fuels is a better strategy to ensure more stable energy prices..
But Mr Opedal defended Equinor's investment in Rosebank, pointing to the impact of Russia's invasion of Ukraine on supplies of oil and gas to Europe.
"One of the key learnings from 2022 is that energy security needs to be on top of the agenda, together with affordability and sustainability," he said.
"Each country needs to, I think, look harder into producing the energy they need closer to home, and that's really what we are working on to make sure we can supply Europe, the UK, with gas and oil these days and for decades to come."

Woodside and Santos end talks on $80bn merger to create oil and gas giant
Woodside Energy and Santos Ltd say they have ended talks to create a possible A$80bn (US$52bn) global oil and gas giant.
Woodside, which is more than twice as large as Santos in terms of market value and revenue, said it would only pursue a deal that would add value for its shareholders.
Santos shares dropped 5% soon after the news was announced while Woodside‘s stock rose 2% on Wednesday.
The talks fell apart as the two companies could not agree on a valuation level, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the matter who could not be named discussing confidential information.
A firm bid did not emerge from Woodside following the almost two months of due diligence and negotiations that the parties undertook, one of the sources said.
Woodside declined to comment on those points and Santos did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

RENEWABLE ENERGY NEWS
World's largest offshore wind developer Ørsted cuts back production targets as costs mount
The world's largest offshore wind developer has scaled back development targets and announced hundreds of job cuts as the renewable industry struggles under the pressure of rising costs.
Orsted, the company developing the Norfolk coast windfarm, Hornsea 3, also suspended shareholder payments in an effort to strengthen its balance sheet.
In common with the industry more broadly, Orsted has been hit by high inflation, raised interest rates, project delays and supply chain difficulties in recent years.
Up to 800 jobs are to go as the company - which owns a big chunk of the UK offshore wind energy capacity - pulls out of the Spanish, Portuguese and Norwegian wind markets.
Wind power generation targets are being revised downwards at the Danish company. By the end of the decade it hopes to produce 35 to 38 gigawatts (GW), down from the previous target of 50 GW, as it hopes to reduce expenditure.

Fossil fuels are losing ground to renewable energy in Europe
The European Union saw a record drop in pollution from fossil fuel power plants last year, according to a new report. Ember , an energy think tank that crunched the numbers, calls it “an unprecedented collapse in coal and gas electricity generation.” Renewable energy is finally starting to take over the power grid.
Fossil fuels dropped to their lowest point since reliable record-keeping started in 1990, making up less than a third of EU’s electricity generation in 2023. Carbon-pollution-free power generation — which includes renewables and nuclear energy — made up more than two-thirds of the electricity mix, and twice as much as fossil fuels.
“What’s encouraging is it’s just continuing that structural decline in fossil fuels,” says Sarah Brown, Ember’s Europe program director. And while records started in 1990, she says, “We think it’s the lowest point ever, because before that fossil fuels were making up the majority and there wasn’t anything else to replace it.”

NUCLEAR & POWER NEWS
Nuclear fusion: new record brings dream of clean energy closer
Nuclear fusion has produced more energy than ever before in an experiment, bringing the world a step closer to the dream of limitless, clean power.
The new world record has been set at the UK-based JET laboratory.
But as Dr.Aniqa Jabeen , Research Fellow in Nuclear Fusion, The University of Manchester explained, this is not straightforward.
"In order for the atoms to fuse together on Earth, we need temperatures ten times hotter than the Sun - around 100 million celsius, and we need a high enough density of the atoms and for a long enough time," she explained.
The experiments produced 69 megajoules of energy over five seconds. That is only enough energy for four to five hot baths - so not a lot.
It is clear we are still a long way off from nuclear fusion power plants, but with every experiment it is bringing us one step closer.
Prof Stuart Mangles , Head of the Space, Plasma and Climate Research Community, Imperial College London , said: "The new results from JET's final run are very exciting.
"This result really highlights the power of international collaboration, these results wouldn't have been possible without the work of hundreds of scientists and engineers from across Europe."

EV and BATTERY NEWS
Europe's deepest mine to become Europe's deepest battery
The deepest metal mine in Europe, unused since 2022, is set to host a giant underground gravity battery.
Pyhäsalmi Mine, located 450 kilometers north of Helsinki in Finland, runs deep into the Earth – 1,444 meters, or around 0.9 miles, to be precise. With its copper and zinc deposits depleted, Pyhäsalmi has a lot of vertical space sitting unused that's perfect for capturing the energy of heavy weights being dropped down a shaft, which is precisely what Scottish energy storage tech firm Gravitricity Ltd plans to use it for.
Gravitricity's intent for the Finnish mine isn't, sadly, a mile-high gravity battery, but a smaller one in a 530-meter (1,738 ft) auxiliary shaft. Once complete, the battery will apparently be able to achieve two megawatt-hours of storage capacity.
"This project will demonstrate at full scale how our technology can offer reliable long-life energy storage that can capture and store energy during periods of low demand and release it rapidly when required," Gravitricity executive chairman Martin Wright told The Herald.
A gravity battery is just what it sounds like: Excess energy generated by power plants is used to move a material upward – in Gravitricity's case it's heavy weights in a mine shaft raised by winches – and when there's an energy shortage the load is dropped and the energy is harvested.
