'Halt button' hit on drilling in US oil and gas slowdown

Next week Texas auctioneer Kruse Asset Management will put two unused, top-of-the-line drilling rigs under the hammer.

The towering structures designed to bore oil and gas wells are on offer for fire sale prices. Valued at $40mn and $30mn when built in 2019, their respective starting bids will be $12.9mn and $2.3mn. “There’s no reason for them to be so cheap, but there’s just no demand,” said Dan Kruse, chief executive of the San Antonio-based auctioneer, who has been selling oilfield equipment for four decades.

An oversupply of equipment is a stark sign that drilling in US shale energy regions is levelling off, as producers respond to lower commodity prices and pressure from Wall Street to direct spare cash to shareholders.

After slowly climbing since the depths of the coronavirus pandemic, the number of oil and natural gas rigs at work in the country has declined 6 per cent since the beginning of the year to 731 last week, according to Baker Hughes , the oilfield services company. Almost 2,000 rigs were running in the middle of 2014, when the shale revolution was at a peak.

Last week the number of gas-directed rigs dropped by 16, or 10 per cent — the steepest weekly fall since 2016.

Putin says oil output cuts needed to maintain prices

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that oil production cuts were required to maintain a certain price level, contradicting assurances from other leaders of the OPEC+ group of producers that it was not seeking to manage the market in that way.

The United States and Europe have accused Russia of weaponising energy to contain the West in its drive to weaken Moscow's military campaign in Ukraine.

Moscow, in its turn, accuses the West of weaponising the dollar and financial systems such as the international payments mechanism SWIFT in retaliation for Russia sending troops into Ukraine in February 2022.

Speaking at a televised government meeting, Putin said that the situation on the global oil market was, on the whole, "absolutely stable" as Russia maintains output cuts to support prices.

He also said that Russia had been cutting production, which was at the "required level".

UK could unlock £70bn a year in renewable energy, report claims

The UK could unlock £70bn every year by generating enough clean electricity to become a major exporter of energy to mainland Europe, according to a former government economist.

A new report has found that by increasing Britain’s clean electricity generation 50% above its current projections for 2050 it could become a clean energy superpower capable of exporting £17bn of green electricity to Europe a year.

The ambition to generate more green electricity than needed to meet the UK’s climate targets could also create an additional 279,000 British jobs, and support a total of 654,000 British jobs, across the UK’s clean energy industries, according to the report.

The analysis by former government economist Chris Walker for the UK Business Council for Sustainable Development found that it was “plausible” that the UK could transform from a net importer of energy to an exporter of green electricity by taking a lead in the global race to “net zero”.

By going “beyond net zero” the UK’s economy would attract trillions of pounds of global private investment and double the £35bn a year economic benefit forecast for its current path, according to Walker.

However, Britain could miss the “once in a lifetime opportunity” unless government policymakers remove the barriers holding back the UK’s green energy ambitions, the report said.

As President Joe Biden signed the landmark Inflation Reduction Act in August 2022, one of the most ambitious pieces of climate-related legislation ever passed in the United States came into law.

North American businesses seeking to accelerate their transition strategy must understand how to seize their share of the lavish provisions for clean energy production and manufacturing the IRA presents.

Spain, Sweden and Belgium: The European countries setting new wind and solar records

Greater solar capacity got Portugal over the halfway mark, while Spain, Finland and Belgium are also breaking energy records.

Solar and wind produced more than half of Portugal’s electricity for the first time last month, according to new data from clean energy think tank Ember.

April saw the renewables reach 51 per cent of electricity production - beating the previous monthly record of 49 per cent in December 2021.

Strong solar deployment, electricity imports from Spain and lower demand kept energy generated by fossil fuels to just 24 per cent - despite a drought-driven dip in hydropower.

“As Europe emerges from a crisis winter, strong growth of wind and solar are paying dividends,” says Ember analyst Nicolas Fulghum. "This spring, renewables are already lessening the impact of droughts and high electricity prices across the EU, as well as lowering emissions.

“The lightning pace of deployment, especially of solar, promises many more records to come this summer.”

As the sector transforms into a decarbonised, digitalised industry, it is crucial that we ensure the talent pools are available and we have the right balance of skills and experience to deliver the projects of the future.

This is why  NES Fircroft  once again partnered with  Energy Jobline  to ensure that we reached out to as many employees and employers as possible to explore this exciting topic.

Following the success of last year’s survey, this time we follow up on some of our previous themes and investigate:

If workers feel they have the skills to tackle the changing energy landscape

Do they want to move sectors? And if they have moved, how did they find the transition?

How do viewpoints differ across sectors?

How do they feel macro events (such as the Russia / Ukraine conflict) will impact the industry

The topics of “projects” and “pay” were again central themes to the results and training was frequently highlighted. The survey unveiled a clear perception that salaries are certainly going in the right direction and are offering comparable packages in many cases to the traditional energy sector.

With this report, we hope to offer energy employers a unique insight into the current temperature of the talent landscape and how they can attract, retain and develop the expertise they need.

Thank you to everyone for their participation, we trust that you will find this research of value and look forward to working with you and continuing to serve the Energy industry in the years ahead.

First nuclear fusion plants to need $7 billion supply chain

Companies looking to harness the process that powers the sun and stars to generate electricity expect to spend about $7 billion by the time their first nuclear fusion plants come online, a survey published on Wednesday said.

Fusion occurs when the nuclei of two light atoms such as hydrogen, heated to extreme temperatures, fuse into one heavier nucleus releasing vast amounts of energy.

Looking to master the fusion process using lasers or magnets, private companies and government labs spent $500 million on their supply chains last year, according to the Fusion Industry Association (FIA) survey.

That spending is set to explode to $7 billion by the time fusion companies develop their first power plant and potentially trillions of dollars in a mature fusion industry, estimated to be sometime between 2035 and 2050, the survey of about two dozen developers said.

Much of the supply chain expense is expected to go to high grade steel and concrete and superconducting wire to build plants where fuels will be heated to more than 100 million Celsius in special chambers. Money will also go to super magnets, lasers, and power supplies.

Britain's battery industry doomed by government, Britishvolt co-founder claims

Britain has now missed its window of opportunity to build a battery industry, and the government, including Rishi Sunak, is largely to blame, the head of collapsed cell manufacturer Britishvolt has told Sky News.

The company was feted as the jewel in Britain's manufacturing crown - the first home-grown gigafactory, co-financed by the government and turning out electric car batteries from its plant in the North East - but went into administration earlier this year.

Now, in his first interview since its implosion, co-founder Orral Nadjari blamed government bureaucracy for its failure.

"We lost that window of opportunity," said Mr Nadjari. "We already are behind East Asia. We're already behind continental Europe. The UK, unfortunately, has lost out or is losing out on the gigafactory economy, which is massive in terms of job creation.

"Unfortunately we didn't see that same support from the Conservative government in order to level up the North East. Because the North East wasn't as important for them as maybe other places in this country."

It comes as Vauxhall's parent company Stellantis called on the government to renegotiate its Brexit deal with the EU, telling a parliamentary committee's inquiry on electric vehicle production it was no longer able to meet trade rules on where parts are sourced.

The Global Energy Talent Index (#GETI) 2023, from our partner Airswift, is now available! - the most established and comprehensive energy workforce trends report.

As the main supporting partner, Energy Jobline members made up almost half of the 10,000 responses from professionals across five industry sub-sectors: #oil and #gas#renewables#power#nuclear and #petrochemicals , to this seventh annual edition of the report.

This year, the survey looks at an industry undergoing tectonic shifts. It examines how this period of flux affects job satisfaction, future destinations, and career aspirations. Industry-wide skills shortages put workers in the driving seat, with 78 per cent of green energy workers being headhunted for a new job.

#GETI2023 explores how trends such as energy shortages and surging fossil fuel prices are having an impact on the workforce and talent landscape.

Key findings include:

More and more candidates are looking for jobs that offer them fulfilment, not just financial compensation

Rising salaries and job satisfaction are reducing worker restlessness

Supply chain costs are surging and exacerbating skills shortages
