As members of the sustainability movement, one thing that should not be overlooked is the items that you already own. Garments have been easily disposed of due to how fast fashion can be bought and disposed of quickly. However, if we collectively learn how to care for our garments, we will be able to extend their life and contribute less to garment waste.

In this edition of Delving with Delvify, we give a few pointers on how you can also take part in this and make sure the life of your garments can be extended as long as possible. Find out more about how you can prolong the life of your garments in the video below:

Don't Wash as Much!

It may sound a bit unhygienic but one of the simplest things to do with your wardrobe items is to minimize the times you wash them. It is definitely an advantage to always have clean clothes but in fact, cleaning your clothes too many times can do more harm than good.

For starters, every single time that a piece of clothing is washed, the fibers get damaged a little bit. If a garment is purchased from a fast fashion brand and not made of good quality, this leads to the deterioration of the garment. If your clothes have not been drenched in sweat, it is advised that you can give them a few more wears before washing them.

Another factor is that microplastics get released with every wash, polluting the waters. This can be from the microplastics that are already present in your garment or if you use detergent pods, which also contain microplastics that will contribute to water pollution. It is always wise to choose the right detergent and do your research to find out which detergents are microplastic-free.

Read Your Washing Labels

Different items of clothing will require different ways to care for them. If you want to be more active and have a more sustainable wardrobe, you will have to read the washing care labels more carefully. There are many different symbols for you to understand in order to maintain your clothing as pristine as when you first bought it!

By carefully following the instructions on the label, you will improve the longevity of each garment. To give a few pointers, you will have to look at each symbol and know what temperature you can wash the piece of clothing with or if you can iron it with low or high heat. Other than that, you can see if your garment is suitable for certain bleaching products or dry cleaning as well.

If you are able to take time to understand the symbols and follow those instructions, you will have a long-lasting wardrobe. Not only will you be able to save money from always having to buy new items of clothing, but you can do your part to save the environment too.

What Can Brands Do To Help?

Of course, caring for purchased garments is the shoppers' responsibility, but how clear the labels are lies with the brand's responsibility. Recently, France new anti-waste law that enforces brands to follow a number of environmental regulations when it comes to labeling. They must cover the product's recyclability, traceability of fabrics used, and any plastic microfibers in the product. Furthermore, the words' eco-friendly' and 'biodegradable' cannot be used.

This creates waves within the fashion industry, as it pushes brands to find ways for digital labeling and also become more transparent within their supply chain. France is not the only country that is pushing for this, the rest of the EU is also looking at different ways that brands will be able to communicate their sustainability efforts to shoppers better.

Creating a more circular economy for textiles can lead to the creation of more jobs, as there will be demand for positions within textile sorting and recycling. With increased awareness among shoppers, brands will have to prioritize investing in technologies that will help with supply chain transparency.
